The 2009 release ‘3 Idiots’, with its famous tagline ‘All Is Well’, achieved massive success, shattering box office records under the direction of Rajkumar Hirani. While the makers themselves announced that the film was based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel ‘Five Point Someone’, a widespread belief has always persisted that Aamir’s character ‘Phunsukh Wangdu’ was inspired by the life of Ladakhi educationist Sonam Wangchuk.
This belief recently ignited a fresh controversy when Aamir Khan, speaking at an event during the London Indian Film Festival, unequivocally stated that neither he nor director Rajkumar Hirani knew Sonam Wangchuk during the film’s making, and that the character had no connection to him whatsoever. He dismissed statements made by Omi Vaidya, who played Chatur in the film, in some video as incorrect.

Upon inquiring with his school in Ladakh, Wangchuk revealed that a film crew had visited in August 2008. However, because they were bringing in a lot of plastic materials, which would harm the environment, his school did not permit shooting there. Consequently, those scenes were shot at another nearby school.
