Exactly 20 years ago, a massive project, initially turned down by ‘Icon Star’ Allu Arjun, became a defining milestone for ‘Energetic Star’ Ram Pothineni. Around 2004-2005, Y.V.S. Chowdary was known as a ‘crazy director’ with a keen understanding of the masses. He envisioned Allu Arjun as the hero for a wonderful love story he had conceived, titled ‘Balaraju’. YVS felt that Allu Arjun’s acting and dance would be a perfect fit for this story. When this was discussed with ‘Mega Producer’ Allu Aravind, a condition was set: the project would launch immediately after Allu Arjun completed his then-ongoing film, ‘Arya’.
However, a small doubt began to grow in director YVS Chowdary’s mind. He feared the uncertainty of ‘Arya’s’ outcome could delay ‘Balaraju’. Unwilling to postpone, he firmly decided to cast a brand new young actor.
It was at this crucial time that YVS noticed photographs of a young man at producer Sravanthi Ravi Kishore’s office. Struck by the spark in his eyes and the glow on his face, YVS declared, “This boy has perfect hero material… he’s the right fit for my film.” Though Ravi Kishore had initially planned to launch Ram with a remake of ‘Yuvasena’, he immediately trusted YVS and gave the green light.

Meanwhile, Ram also received a significant offer to star as the hero in ‘Kadhal’, a Tamil film that later became a classic hit. However, trusting his Tollywood debut, Ram turned down that Kollywood opportunity.
As fate would have it, ‘Arya’ was subsequently released and became an industry hit. Consequently, Allu Aravind himself called YVS Chowdary, offering Allu Arjun’s dates for a film. But YVS, having already given his word to Ram, resisted the temptation and, staying true to his promise, proceeded with the new young actor.
Thus, ‘Balaraju’ was retitled ‘Devadasu’ and released in theaters in 2006, starring Ileana.
