Excellent news finally arrives for Tollywood! After a long nine-year hiatus, the much-awaited Nandi Awards are making a grand return. The Andhra Pradesh government has announced the revival of these prestigious annual accolades, sparking immense joy and anticipation across the film, television, and theatre industries. This marks a significant moment for South Indian arts.

Tollywood’s Grand Nandi Comeback

Excellent news for Tollywood audiences! After a 9-year wait, the prestigious Nandi Awards are set to be revived, marking a grand celebration. The Andhra Pradesh government is bringing back these annual awards, much to the joy of artists in the film, television, and theatre industries.

Andhra Pradesh Minister Kandula Durgesh recently made a key announcement in Rajahmundry, clarifying that Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has given the green light for presenting the Nandi Awards, and the ceremony will be held soon. This revival comes after the awards were last presented in 2017 for the years 2014, 2015, and 2016 by the then government. No awards were given thereafter, as the YSRCP, upon coming to power, halted the prestigious event. Now, the coalition government is making preparations to resume these awards, with the ceremony expected to be organized in the state within two to three months.

Comprehensive discussions are needed to decide whether to continue with the existing Nandi Awards format or implement any changes before a final decision is made. Minister Durgesh also mentioned that advice regarding the Nandi Awards would be sought from Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and Nandamuri Balakrishna. In addition to the film and television awards, Nandi Theatre Festivals (Nandi Natakotsavalu) will also be conducted, with their venue to be announced shortly. However, details are yet to be known on whether this time the awards will cover films and artists from all nine years of the hiatus, and how the entire event will be planned.

The Nandi Awards are annual accolades presented by the Andhra Pradesh government to recognize outstanding talent in Telugu cinema, theatre, and television, as well as lifetime achievements in Indian cinema.

Planning the Nandi Revival: What’s Next?

At the Nandi Awards ceremony held in 2017, ‘Legend’ received the Best Film award for 2014, and Balakrishna was honored as Best Actor. Similarly, for 2015, ‘Baahubali (The Beginning)’ was named Best Film, and Mahesh Babu (‘Srimanthudu’) received the Best Actor award. For 2016, ‘Pelli Choopulu’ won Best Film, and Jr. NTR (‘Janatha Garage,’ ‘Nannaku Prematho’) was awarded Best Actor.

Meanwhile, the Telangana government presents the Gaddar Awards in place of the Nandi Awards, with the Congress government there planning to grandly organize the Gaddar Awards ceremony on Ugadi this year.

With the Nandi Awards ceremony set to take place soon, joy is overflowing among Tollywood artists and theatre professionals alike. Stay tuned for more updates regarding this event.

Looking Ahead

This return, after nearly a decade, isn’t just about accolades; it’s a powerful statement of Andhra Pradesh’s commitment to our cinematic heritage. We eagerly anticipate how these revived awards will further inspire excellence and propel Telugu cinema to greater heights, nationally and globally.
