The legendary rivalry between Tollywood titans NTR and Superstar Krishna wasn’t confined to films; it often ignited fierce real-life box office wars. Surprisingly, this intense dispute led to significant cinematic disasters for films starring their successors, Balayya and Ramesh Babu. Let’s delve into this intriguing chapter.

NTR & Krishna: Legends’ Fierce Title War

Shocking: A Title War Between NTR and Krishna! Huge Losses for Balayya, Ramesh Babu!
NTR and Superstar Krishna were once dominant star heroes in Tollywood, known for their fierce rivalry for dominance and their pioneering role in ushering Telugu cinema onto a commercial path. While they shared a friendship, conflicts also arose at various stages, creating a ‘you or me’ dynamic and an inevitable box office war. News of a specific dispute they once had over a movie title is now going viral. Krishna remarkably emerged as a mass hero of similar stature after NTR. Their disputes weren’t limited to professional rivalry; personal matters also sparked contention. When NTR was Chief Minister, Krishna’s films opposing him became a major controversy. Furthermore, a significant dispute arose between them regarding the film ‘Dana Veera Soora Karna’, as both made films in fierce competition. When NTR succeeded, Krishna faced setbacks, a realization he came to later. These two clashed not only for themselves but also for their successors, leading to a notable fight over a movie title. Reportedly, NTR fiercely competed for Balakrishna’s film, and Krishna asserted his position for Ramesh Babu’s movie. Let’s delve into that story.

Balakrishna, continuing NTR’s legacy as his acting successor, was establishing himself as a hero when he made a film titled ‘Samrat’. Master director K. Raghavendra Rao directed this action drama, produced by K.C. Sekhar Babu, which NTR took up very prestigiously. It was released in 1987.

Simultaneously, Krishna was introducing his own successor, Ramesh Babu, as a hero with a film also titled ‘Samrat’. Directed by V. Madhusudhana Rao, it starred Sonam as the heroine opposite Ramesh Babu, with Sharada in a pivotal role.

“Samrat” Saga: Double Disaster for Sons

As both Balayya’s ‘Samrat’ and Ramesh Babu’s ‘Samrat’ were made simultaneously, a title dispute ensued. Neither NTR nor Krishna was willing to back down on the title, and despite promotions having already begun, neither compromised, causing the dispute to reach its peak. Ultimately, NTR had to concede because his movie was slated for an earlier release. Consequently, Balakrishna’s film title was changed to ‘Sahasa Samrat’.

This movie, released on April 17, 1987, became a disaster at the box office. Later, in October of the same year, Ramesh Babu’s film, still titled ‘Samrat’, was released, and it also turned out to be a disaster. Both movies failed. However, the fact that NTR and Krishna engaged in such a dispute over a title became a huge topic of discussion back then.

Nevertheless, they managed to limit these conflicts to some extent, and personally, both maintained a good relationship. Later, whenever they met, they would converse affectionately; NTR would invite Krishna to his home, and Krishna would invite NTR for a meal. This title dispute between NTR and Krishna became a sensation at the time, and its outcomes were disappointing for both Balayya and Ramesh Babu.

Looking Ahead

NTR and Krishna’s ‘Samrat’ title war, though personally respectful, tragically brought misfortune upon their sons. Balayya and Ramesh Babu’s films suffered. This saga reminds: even legendary rivalries cast long, unpredictable shadows, shaping the next generation’s destiny in Telugu cinema.
