The ‘Ramayanam’ teaser, with Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, has dropped, sparking the crucial South Indian question: does it echo the much-criticized ‘Adipurush’? While critics are praising Ranbir’s impressive portrayal across his magnificent avatars, the visual effects and overall aesthetic are already fueling a lively debate.

Ranbir’s Rama: An Impressive Embodiment

The teaser for ‘Ramayanam,’ starring Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, has been released, prompting a crucial question: does it echo the much-criticized ‘Adipurush’? This marks Ranbir Kapoor’s first foray into a mythological film, and his portrayal of Sri Rama in the teaser is certainly impressive. He appears in various magnificent avatars – as a prince and as Rama in exile – with critics largely praising his wonderful acting.

However, while the teaser presents itself grandly with heavy graphics, it seems there’s something subtly missing, particularly regarding the war scenes, which some critics describe as resembling a video game. In the ‘Ramayanam’ teaser, Ranbir is seen in various avatars as Rama, from a prince holding a bow to Rama during his exile. While Ranbir looks splendid, a noticeable discrepancy arises with the grand palaces, forts, and overall graphics work. The teaser, despite its focus on Ranbir Kapoor’s magnificent look as Rama, heavily relies on computer-generated imagery. This has drawn criticism, as audiences generally expect a portrayal of Rama’s life to be closer to reality, a sentiment seemingly overlooked by the film’s reliance on extensive graphics.

This heavy reliance on graphics inevitably draws comparisons to the ill-fated ‘Adipurush,’ Om Raut’s previous Bollywood adaptation with Prabhas as Rama, which, despite immense hype, proved to be a disaster. Much like ‘Adipurush,’ the ‘Ramayanam’ teaser seems to prioritize a grand visual display, giving excessive importance to graphics. The war scenes, in particular, have been singled out for looking more like a video game than ancient warfare, failing to resonate with traditional depictions of Ramayanam that were accessible and relatable to common people.

Graphics Debate: Adipurush Comparisons

Despite these graphical concerns, Ranbir Kapoor’s embodiment of Rama remains a strong point. Throughout the teaser, the focus is largely on him, and his various avatars – as a prince, as Rama in exile, and as a warrior wielding weapons – are all commendably executed. Particularly striking is his portrayal of Rama in exile, where, dressed in simple clothes with his hair tied in a bun, Sri Rama presents himself as a calm and serene figure. Ranbir Kapoor appears to have fully immersed himself in the character.

The film ‘Ramayanam’ is directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra. The ensemble cast includes Sai Pallavi, Ravi Dubey (who will portray Lakshmana), Sunny Deol, Yash, and Arun Govil, alongside Ranbir Kapoor. Set to be released in two parts for Diwali in 2026 and 2027, Ranbir’s ‘Ramayanam’ teaser has certainly raised expectations, despite the debates surrounding its graphics. We look forward to the film’s release and will provide more movie updates.

Looking Ahead

After Adipurush’s lessons, Ranbir’s ‘Ramayanam’ teaser sparks both hope and familiar graphics debate. We, in the South, keenly await a saga that respects our rich narrative traditions. Success hinges on a heartfelt portrayal and authentic vision, transcending mere VFX to truly resonate with our cultural ethos.
