March has been a dreadful month for Tollywood, with the box office seeing a widespread meltdown. Numerous small films crashed, failing to even recover investments due to weak content and poor publicity, leaving cinemas eerily quiet. The big shocker came with Ustad Bhagat Singh also faltering. Now, all hopes are pinned on the upcoming Sree Ramanavami releases to revive the industry’s fortunes.

Tollywood’s March Misfortune

March has proven to be an exceptionally unfavorable month for Tollywood, with the box office losing its charm as numerous releases failed to meet expectations. More than half a dozen small films have collapsed, unable to even recover their investments due to a lack of strong content and proper publicity, leaving theaters devoid of buzz even as summer holidays approach. Amidst this disappointing trend, all eyes are now on the Sree Ramanavami releases, especially after the highly anticipated ‘Ustad Bhagat Singh’ also faltered.

‘Ustad Bhagat Singh’, released on March 19 as an Ugadi gift, had massive expectations. Harish Shankar’s signature dialogues and Pawan Kalyan’s mass appeal were believed to save the film. However, with a routine storyline and old-formula filmmaking, the film received mixed reviews. Despite massive collections on the first day, revenues drastically dropped from the second day onwards. Made with a budget of approximately Rs. 150 crores, the film has so far failed to recover even 35% and is heading towards a ‘disaster’, shocking trade circles. While ‘Ustad’ was expected to create a huge roar at the box office, it instead turned silent.

Against this backdrop of continuous disappointments, the Tollywood industry has now pinned its hopes on the five films slated for release during the Sree Ramanavami weekend. Anxious trade circles ponder whether this week will finally change Tollywood’s fortunes or if the streak of flops will persist.

Among these, Harsh Roshan and Sridevi, who gained some recognition with the film ‘Kourt’, are returning with another story about a brother-in-law and sister-in-law. While the emotional dialogues by the hero, such as “My heart healed only after you came… and you broke it again,” are decent, the real question is whether the story offers anything new. It remains to be seen how much old formulas like a rural backdrop and a brother-in-law yearning for his sister-in-law will appeal to today’s youth. Although Saikumar plays a key role, all hopes for this film, releasing on March 26, rest on Vijay Bulganin’s music. It remains to be seen if it will create a sensation or merely make some noise.

Ramanavami: Last Hope for Revival?

Sudigali Sudheer, a star on television, is still searching for a breakthrough hit on the big screen. Sudheer’s fans have high hopes for ‘G.O.A.T’ (GOAT), a cricket-themed film with commercial elements. While Divyabharathi’s glamour and comedy elements are touted as plus points, the film is lagging in promotions. This too is arriving in theaters on March 26. Only if Sudheer succeeds in drawing mass audiences to theaters will this ‘goat’ roar like a tiger at the box office.

Priyadarshi, who has carved a niche for himself with diverse roles, is coming this time with a psychological thriller titled ‘Suyodhana’. The director states that this film is about the struggle between good and evil within a person. Despite the presence of senior actors like Saikumar and Prema, dark thrillers like this tend to have limited theatrical appeal. Releasing on March 27, this film will only stand strong at the box office if it impresses the class audience. Otherwise, it risks becoming another ‘OTT material’.

While Tollywood faces such a dire situation, Tamil dubbed films from the neighboring state are also entering the race. Ken Karunas’s ‘Youth’ is a story set against a school backdrop. Meanwhile, ‘Happy Raj’, starring G.V. Prakash and Shree Gowri Priya, is also arriving on March 27. Notably, ‘Premadesam’ fame Abbas is making a re-entry with this film. However, Telugu audiences have little familiarity with these heroes. When even local films are struggling to perform smoothly, it’s no easy feat for these dubbed movies to create magic at the box office.

The continuous ‘parade of flops’ in March has led to audience weariness towards small films, severely impacting exhibitors. The absence of a strong performer has created an alarming situation for the Tollywood box office. The industry now anxiously awaits the Sree Ramanavami releases, hoping at least one of these films can generate blockbuster buzz and offer much-needed relief. The question remains: will the auspicious occasion of Srirama Navami bring a change in fortune, or will silence continue to reign supreme at the box office? Only time will tell if these films can be the saviors Tollywood desperately needs.

Looking Ahead

Tollywood desperately needs a hit. March was brutal, with flops tiring audiences and hurting exhibitors. All eyes are now on Sree Ramanavami releases. Will this auspicious occasion finally bring the blockbuster magic Tollywood craves, or will the box office drought persist? The fate of our industry hangs in the balance.
