  • HUMILIATING: Bollywood dubbed film RESCUES empty Tollywood theatres!

March, usually a golden period for Tollywood, became a financial disaster this year. Instead of blockbusters and small hits, the month saw shocking box office losses. Major star vehicles faltered dramatically, and even smaller films couldn’t recoup basic costs. The ultimate insult? Our theatres were ironically saved by a dubbed Bollywood film. What went wrong for Tollywood?

March: Tollywood’s Box Office Curse

Tollywood March box office: March – this month was once a golden period for Tollywood. From small films like ‘Balagam’ and ‘Jathi Ratnalu’ to pan-India wonders like ‘RRR’, many movies rained collections during this month. However, this year, the month of March turned into a curse for Tollywood. After much anticipation, ‘Ustaad’ finally made its entry amidst numerous expectations, only to fall flat at the box office, while notably, even small films couldn’t recover their poster costs. More importantly, while our Telugu heroes abandoned the box office, it became a huge insult for Tollywood that a dubbed film from Bollywood had to save our theatres.

Coming to the first week of March, a staggering 10 films attacked the box office. But not a single one managed to win the hearts of the audience. Sri Vishnu gave a big buildup for his thriller movie ‘Mrutyunjaya’, but it turned out to be a dismal flop in theatres. For Varalaxmi Sarathkumar’s ‘Saraswati’, where she took on every role, the fact that it didn’t even get opening collections showed how weak the content was. Then, apparently because someone said it would do some magic like ‘Little Arts’, the film ‘Sampradayani Suppini Suddapoosani’, which should have gone straight to OTT, was brought to theatres. However, the audience sent it packing with zero marks, proving the makers’ judgment utterly wrong. It’s surprising that even the crazy pair Shivaji and Laya couldn’t salvage this film!

As the first week passed, makers couldn’t even release films in the second week. The reason was the buzz that Pawan Kalyan and Harish Shankar’s ‘Ustaad Bhagat Singh’ would be entering theatres. As a result, theatres had no new content for two weeks. However, when ‘Ustaad Bhagat Singh’ made its entry in the third week with a massive budget and even greater expectations, hoping it would shake up the box office and fill the gap, it delivered a big shock with a ‘mixed talk’ on the very first day. No matter how much Harish Shankar tried to pull the box office cart with his signature dialogues and Pawan with his unique mannerisms, weak content became an obstacle. While the film seemed acceptable with a total net collection of Rs. 34.75 crores on the first day, the fact that it dropped by a whopping 80% on the second day clearly shows how much it disappointed the audience. Notably, despite a long weekend and festival holidays, it couldn’t even cross a gross of Rs 100 crores in 7 days, making it one of the most disastrous failures in Pawan Kalyan’s career.

Bollywood’s Rescue: Content Reigns Supreme

With ‘Ustaad Bhagat Singh’s fate sealed, small films queued up again in the fourth week. Among them, ‘Band Melam’ (Harsh Roshan, Sridevi) earned the tag of ‘extremely boring’, especially delivering a big shock to Kona Venkat, who planned to mint crores with the ‘court pair’. As for Priyadarshi’s film ‘Suyodhana’, it’s doubtful if even the makers know it was released. And the dubbed film ‘Youth’, expected to rake in money, also joined the disaster list. GV Prakash Kumar’s ‘Happyraj’ didn’t fare much better either.

On one hand, small films didn’t perform, there were no mid-range films, and the anticipated ‘Ustaad Bhagat Singh’ also abandoned the box office. In this dire situation, if the Tollywood box office managed to show even a little sparkle, it was only because of Ranveer Singh’s ‘Dhurandhar-2’. Indeed, where our heroes gave up, this dubbed film saved the theatres. All in all, this month of March has been a big lesson for the Tollywood box office. The failure of ‘Ustaad Bhagat Singh’ proved that without good content, no matter how big a star hero is, audiences won’t even bother to look at theatres. This widespread disappointment and the financial losses suffered by producers due to a lack of box office collections, exacerbated by the two-week content drought while awaiting Pawan Kalyan’s film, highlight a critical need for change. If our filmmakers don’t wake up now, discard old formulas, and start thinking innovatively, dubbed films from neighboring states are certain to dominate here in the future. The month of March, therefore, left Tollywood deeply disappointed, facing the humiliating reality that a dubbed Bollywood film had to come to its rescue.

Looking Ahead

March delivered a harsh truth: Tollywood’s star power isn’t enough without compelling content. A dubbed film rescuing our theatres is a humbling lesson. Our industry must now shed outdated formulas and innovate, or face a future where our own stories are sidelined by those from other shores. The message is clear.
