Movie Review: ‘Gorre Puranam’

Director: Bobby
Cast: Suhas, Raghu, Posani Krishna Murali
Producer: Praveen Reddy
Music: Pawan CH
Release Date: October 21

Plot Summary:

The story revolves around Ravi (Suhas), who begins the film in jail for committing a murder. Simultaneously, a sheep named Ram alias Yesu is trying to escape its fate of being sacrificed. The sheep moves through various hands – from a butcher to a Muslim family – and ultimately finds itself in a village temple. Here, the sheep becomes a symbol of divine intervention, leading to religious conflicts and media frenzy.

As the sheep’s situation escalates, it is arrested for causing communal tension, and coincidentally, it is placed in the same jail as Ravi. The film then dives into Ravi’s backstory and his efforts to save the sheep, unraveling a quirky yet socially charged narrative.

Performances:

  • Suhas: Although his screen time is limited, Suhas impresses in his portrayal of Ravi, a prisoner with a mysterious past. His role is pivotal to the story, and he manages to deliver a performance that fits the tone of the film, even though the emotional connection could have been stronger.
  • Voice Acting: Since the sheep plays a central role, the director cleverly uses voice dubbing to bring out its character. Tarun Bhascker lends his voice to the lead sheep, providing a comedic yet poignant element. Getup Srinu dubs for another sheep, and their interactions bring humor to the film.
  • Supporting Cast: Raghu and Posani Krishna Murali deliver solid performances, staying within the limits of their characters. Most other cast members are relatively new, but they fit well into the satirical tone of the movie.

Technical Aspects:

  • Direction: Bobby attempts to deliver a socio-political satire, mixing humor with serious themes like religious conflict, political manipulation, and media sensationalism. While the concept is strong, the execution falters in maintaining the emotional depth and connection with the audience. Some critical plot points, such as Ravi’s motivations, remain underexplored, leaving the film feeling incomplete in certain areas.
  • Screenplay: The first half of the movie flows smoothly with engaging comedy sequences revolving around the sheep, but the second half struggles to maintain momentum. The courtroom scenes, where Suhas delivers some thought-provoking dialogues, stand out but are not enough to elevate the overall narrative.
  • Cinematography: The cinematography complements the film’s mood, capturing the satirical undertones well. The village setting, religious conflicts, and courtroom scenes are shot effectively, adding to the narrative’s visual appeal.
  • Background Score: Pawan CH’s background score aligns well with the quirky tone of the film. It enhances key moments without overpowering the narrative, particularly in the comedic and emotionally tense scenes.
  • Production Values: Given the film’s limited budget, the production values are decent. However, the film could have benefited from a larger budget to flesh out certain scenes and improve the overall execution.

Themes and Social Commentary:

  • Main Concept: The film explores how political leaders often divert attention from real issues by creating new problems, with someone or something becoming the sacrificial lamb. In this case, the sheep symbolizes how people, like sheep, blindly follow trends and controversies without using common sense.
  • Satirical Elements: The director takes jabs at multiple societal elements, including religious tensions, media sensationalism, animal rights activism, and social media trends. By using the sheep as a metaphor, the film highlights how easily society gets distracted by superficial issues.

Comparison to Other Films:

  • The satirical tone and socio-political commentary in ‘Gorre Puranam’ are reminiscent of Aamir Khan’s ‘Peepli Live’. However, while ‘Peepli Live’ maintained a gripping narrative, ‘Gorre Puranam’ struggles with emotional engagement, leaving the audience somewhat disconnected from the characters.
  • Another recent film with a similar approach is ‘Deepavali’ from the Tamil industry, though the storylines differ entirely. Both films tackle social issues through humor and satire, but ‘Gorre Puranam’ takes a more surreal approach with its use of animals as central figures.

Strengths:

  • Unique Concept: The premise of using a sheep as the central character to comment on religious and political issues is fresh and engaging.
  • Comedy: The humor, especially the voiceovers for the sheep, adds a layer of charm and keeps the first half entertaining.
  • Runtime: At just 1 hour and 42 minutes, the film is tightly paced, making it an easy watch despite some flaws in the narrative.

Weaknesses:

  • Lack of Emotional Depth: The film’s emotional core, especially concerning Ravi’s backstory and the murder plot, feels underdeveloped. The emotional connection between Ravi and the audience could have been stronger.
  • Incomplete Storyline: Certain key elements are left unresolved, likely in anticipation of a sequel, which leaves the audience feeling that the story was left unfinished.
  • Second Half: While the first half holds attention with humor, the second half loses some of its grip, with the fun decreasing and the social commentary taking center stage.

Final Verdict:

‘Gorre Puranam’ is a bold attempt at delivering a social satire through a quirky narrative centered around a sheep. The film tackles important issues, from religious conflicts to political manipulation, with humor and wit. While the concept is commendable and the first half is entertaining, the film falters in maintaining emotional engagement and leaves some plot points unresolved. It’s a good one-time watch for those who enjoy satirical films and can overlook the logical gaps.
