Viswam Movie Review: Gopichand’s Action Entertainer

Introduction

Hero Gopichand is synonymous with action films, while director Sreenu Vaitla is known for his comedy entertainers. Both have faced a series of setbacks recently. Their latest collaboration, ‘Viswam,’ aims for success during the Dussehra season. This film marks their first collaboration, and expectations are high. But does it deliver an engaging experience? Let’s explore the storyline and find out in this Viswam movie review.

Plot Summary

‘Viswam’ begins with a bomb blast in Hyderabad. The notorious terrorist Jalaluddin Qureshi (Jishu Sen Gupta), operating under the alias Sanjay Sharma, orchestrates plans to create chaos in India. He manipulates the education system to turn students into terrorists, planning a massive attack. With the assistance of Bachiraju (Sunil), the brother of Central Minister Seetharamaraju (Suman), he eliminates the minister to cover his tracks. A young girl, Darshan, witnesses this heinous act, leading to attempts on her life.

Enter Gopireddy (Gopichand), who is introduced as Viswam—a protector determined to save the girl from imminent danger. As he gets involved, several questions arise: Why is he hiding his true identity? What is his background? And how does his love story with Sameera (Kavya Thapar) play out? The film unfolds as we discover how Gopichand navigates these challenges.

How It Unfolds

Sreenu Vaitla’s films often revolve around national security and personal sacrifice. This time, he attempts to break free from his traditional formula and presents a narrative aimed at modern audiences. However, while the film begins with potential, it quickly becomes apparent that the director hasn’t fully departed from his usual style.

The film kicks off interestingly with the bomb blast episode but loses seriousness once Gopichand enters the heroine’s household, shifting towards expected comedic elements. The comedic antics of Prithvi and Srinivas add some laughter, but the romantic subplot feels somewhat stale.

As the plot progresses, Jalaluddin’s attempts to eliminate the girl lead to a mix of serious and comedic moments. The film features a well-executed action sequence set in Goa, followed by a much-anticipated train episode that offers comedic relief. This train sequence, though entertaining, doesn’t quite reach the levels of previous Vaitla films like ‘Dookudu.’

Performances

Gopichand shines in his action sequences, delivering a performance that resonates with his fans. He brings charisma to the character, though the role itself is not particularly groundbreaking. Kavya Thapar makes a glamorous appearance, but her acting lacks depth. Jishu Sen Gupta plays the antagonist effectively, while Sunil serves as a comedic villain. Supporting actors, including Rahul Ramakrishna, Prithvi, VTV Ganesh, and Naresh, add humor but often feel underutilized.

Technical Aspects

Chetan Bhardwaj’s music provides some catchy tracks, with the song ‘Gunguru Gunguru’ standing out. The cinematography by KV Guhan is visually appealing, especially in foreign locations and drone shots. However, the graphics sometimes fall short of expectations. The production values are commendable, reflecting the effort put in by the producers.

Positives

  • Gopichand’s Performance: His action scenes and comedic timing resonate well with the audience.
  • Sreenu Vaitla’s Humor: The film offers moments of laughter, particularly through the comedic tracks.
  • Visual Appeal: Cinematography and production values are top-notch, enhancing the overall viewing experience.

Negatives

  • Predictable Storyline: The film adheres to familiar tropes and lacks originality.
  • Weak Character Development: The characters, especially the heroine, are not well fleshed out, leading to a lack of emotional connection.
  • Inconsistent Tone: The shift from serious to comedic elements disrupts the film’s flow.

Final Thoughts

‘Viswam’ attempts to bring a fresh narrative but ultimately adheres to the traditional commercial formula. While it offers moments of entertainment, especially through humor, it lacks the depth and originality that modern audiences crave. The predictable storyline, combined with familiar themes, may leave viewers wanting more. If you’re looking for a light-hearted action entertainer, this film might suffice; however, it may not leave a lasting impression.

In conclusion, ‘Viswam’ is a routine commercial action entertainer that combines Gopichand’s signature style with Sreenu Vaitla’s trademark humor. If you go in expecting a fun ride with action and laughter, you may find some enjoyment, but it doesn’t break new ground in storytelling or character development.
