Filmmaker Varun Gupta‘s shocking Netflix and OTT suggestions for Tollywood have gone massively viral, igniting crucial conversations among South Indian audiences. He sharply criticized linking OTT rates to theatrical collections, detailing how small films suffer immensely without proper marketing. Gupta’s bold proposals, demanding justice and support from big producers for smaller ventures, are now truly shaking the industry.

Gupta Slams Unfair OTT Deals & Marketing

Varun Gupta’s sensational comments on the OTT business, particularly his shocking suggestions for Netflix and remarks on OTT rates in Tollywood, have gone viral. He expresses strong displeasure over linking OTT rates to theatrical collections and highlights how small films incur significant losses due to a lack of marketing. Gupta also criticizes the low price offered for the film ‘Haq’ on Netflix, deeming it unfair, and proposes that big producers should allocate profits for the marketing of smaller films.

These remarks come amidst a transformed film world, particularly post-pandemic, where even common people have gained a deeper understanding of film budgets and box office figures. However, a glaring disparity persists where star-hero films command massive budgets while smaller productions struggle to secure funds for promotions—a major hurdle Varun Gupta describes as a “vicious cycle.” Previously, terms like budgets, overhead costs, and recovery were limited to industry insiders, but now, thanks to platforms like Twitter and Reddit, even the average audience member is aware of them. Despite possessing talent and compelling content, small films frequently lag behind. Is the primary reason simply a lack of a marketing budget?

Varun Gupta, head of Max Marketing, renowned for handling promotions for blockbusters such as ‘Baahubahubali,’ ‘Hanuman,’ and ‘Dhurandhar,’ delved into this subject in an interview with Hindustan Times. He highlighted the industry’s significant paradox: those who least require promotions often have millions at their disposal, while those who desperately need marketing to gain public recognition are left with absolutely nothing.

Big Producers Must Fund Small Films

Gupta also criticized Netflix’s policies, citing the film ‘Haq’ as a prime example. “Currently, the film ‘Haq’ is performing exceptionally well on Netflix. However, because the film did not achieve significant theatrical collections, Netflix likely acquired it for a low price. This is deeply unfair,” Varun Gupta asserted. He emphasized that films with good content that become hits on OTT platforms should be given a fair price, irrespective of their theatrical performance. To break this “vicious cycle,” Varun Gupta offered a concrete suggestion: “Big producers should allocate the profits remaining from their blockbuster films for the marketing of small films. Only then can small films truly break free from this vicious cycle.”

These pointed remarks by Varun Gupta have ignited a heated discussion in Tollywood, prompting industry members to consider his suggestions for ensuring justice for smaller productions.

Looking Ahead

Gupta’s insights have undeniably sparked a pivotal debate across our regional industries. This isn’t merely Tollywood’s concern; it’s a clarion call for genuine equity. Translating this discourse into tangible action, ensuring our smaller films get their deserved spotlight, is now paramount. A new era of fairness beckons.
