After 24 agonizing years, the Supreme Court is set to deliver its final verdict today in the haunting death case of actress Pratyusha. This protracted legal saga, born from her mother’s foul play allegations in 2002, deeply impacted Telugu cinema circles and the public. The culmination of this battle, following accused Siddhartha Reddy’s appeal, promises a much-anticipated judgment for South India.

Verdict Looms in 24-Year Case

The Supreme Court is poised to deliver its final verdict today in the 24-year-old death case of actress Pratyusha, an incident that has drawn significant attention. The legal battle began in 2002 following a complaint filed by Pratyusha’s mother, Sarojini, alleging foul play. The accused, Siddhartha Reddy, subsequently appealed, challenging his sentence, leading to the prolonged judicial process culminating today.

The late actress Pratyusha, born into a middle-class family in Bhuvanagiri, Telangana, made a notable mark in the Telugu film industry. Her mother, Smt. Sarojini Devi, was a government school teacher, and she had a brother named Praneeth Chandra. Pratyusha completed her schooling across various institutions, including Santhosh Vidyaniketan in Bhuvanagiri, Prakash Public School in Miryalaguda, and St. Ann’s High School in Tarnaka, Hyderabad. After intermediate education at Gautami Residential Academy in SR Nagar, she pursued a Bachelor of Hotel Management at JB Institute of Hotel Management in Banjara Hills. While she had made her acting debut in 1998 with the film ‘Ramudu’, it was her participation in Television Star in 2000, where she won the ‘Smt. Lovely Smile’ crown, that further paved her way into the film industry. She gained immense popularity, particularly for her role as Mohan Babu’s daughter in N. Shankar’s ‘Sriramulayya’, a film based on the life of Paritala Sreeramulu.

At the peak of her career, having starred in films like ‘Snehama Ante Idera’ and ‘Kalusukovalani’, Pratyusha attempted suicide by consuming pesticide along with her boyfriend, Siddhartha Reddy, on February 23, 2002. Tragically, Pratyusha died while undergoing treatment in the hospital, while Siddhartha Reddy recovered. Pratyusha’s mother, Sarojini, alleging that her daughter’s death was caused by Siddhartha Reddy, filed a complaint at the police station, leading to his arrest and the registration of a case against him.

The Life and Mystery of Pratyusha

The case has been ongoing for 24 years. Last November, Siddhartha Reddy appealed to the Supreme Court, challenging his jail sentence, while Pratyusha’s mother, Sarojini, filed petitions demanding an increase in his punishment. The Supreme Court reserved its judgment on these petitions last November, setting the stage for today’s eagerly anticipated verdict.

Expressing her anguish, Pratyusha’s mother, Sarojini, continues to assert that her daughter did not commit suicide but was “deliberately subjected to atrocities, tormented, and brutally tortured by some individuals,” which ultimately led to her death. She firmly believes that the accused will face justice, stating that “God himself will deliver justice,” and expressed her anger, emphasizing that the Supreme Court “should not let Siddhartha Reddy off.” As the court prepares to deliver its verdict, there is keen interest in what conclusion this long-standing and tragic case will finally reach after 24 years.

Looking Ahead

After 24 agonizing years, Sarojini Amma’s relentless fight for Pratyusha’s justice culminates. As the Supreme Court delivers its verdict, the South watches, praying for a judgment that ensures true accountability. May this long-awaited decision finally bring peace to a mother’s tormented soul and closure to this tragic saga.
