Bollywood’s Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge, a recent box office sensation, boasts a star-studded cast including Ranveer Singh. Yet, it’s not the lead actors but rather Prime Minister Modi’s surprise cameo scenes that have truly set social media ablaze. These viral clips are now overshadowing Ranveer’s performance and sparking intense debate across South Indian circles, from Kollywood to Tollywood.

Modi’s Viral Cameo Steals The Show

Directed by Bollywood filmmaker Aditya Dhar, Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge is creating a sensation at the box office. Released worldwide on March 19, this highly anticipated sequel is shattering records, featuring a star-studded cast including Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan, and Arjun Rampal.

However, what has truly captivated audiences and garnered immense buzz is the electrifying presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the film. Clips from Dhurandhar 2 have been going viral on social media since its paid previews on March 18. Scenes depicting PM Modi’s oath-taking ceremony and his speech after the 2014 election victory have become major highlights. As soon as Modi appears on screen, theatres erupt with chants of ‘Jai Modi’ and enthusiastic whistling. Netizens are commenting that Modi’s scenes are receiving a greater response than those of the hero, Ranveer Singh, with some jokingly suggesting Modi deserves a ‘Best Supporting Actor’ award for his impactful cameo.

Director Aditya Dhar has brilliantly woven real-life events into the film’s fictional narrative. While an actor portrays Narendra Modi in some parts, original footage was also skillfully integrated. Notably, the demonetization announcement on November 8, 2016, which shook the nation, is depicted as a pivotal turning point in the story. Scenes where Modi discusses a mission with the character Ajay Sanyal, as well as dialogues where the Dawood Ibrahim character states, “He has become a big problem for us,” have further elevated the film’s stature and added to its virality.

Despite its success, the film faced numerous controversies prior to its release. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) reportedly suggested approximately 21 cuts before granting it an ‘A’ certificate. Critics argue that the film contains excessive political elements, branding it a form of propaganda. Specifically, some on social media have criticized it for seemingly endorsing demonetization while overlooking the hardships it caused. The makers, however, maintain that it is merely an attempt to foster patriotism.

Real Politics Meets Reel Drama

The first installment, Dhurandhar, released in 2025, set a record by grossing over ₹1,300 crore, raising expectations significantly for its sequel. With a runtime of approximately 229 minutes (around 3 hours and 49 minutes), this film stands as one of the longest released recently. Shot in India and Thailand, over 5 lakh tickets were sold through paid previews alone, indicative of its immense anticipation.

Ranveer Singh, as the undercover agent Hamza, once again showcases his acting prowess in a mission that sees him risking his life fighting within Pakistan’s criminal and political network. Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, Arjun Rampal, and Sara Arjun also delivered stellar performances.

Beyond just action, the film powerfully presents an emotional dimension. Available in Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam, Dhurandhar 2 is poised for massive pan-India openings, with its news continuing to dominate social media, particularly the overwhelming and surprising response to the Modi scenes.

Looking Ahead

As Dhurandhar 2 captures pan-India, especially Southern, attention, Modi’s viral scenes signal a profound cultural shift. This potent fusion of politics and entertainment, commanding such surprising engagement, heralds a new cinematic era. Its lasting implications for our screens and political narratives will undoubtedly be truly compelling.
