South Indian cinema’s fan devotion is legendary, often sparking intense rivalries. But in 1993, the Varasudu release, starring Nagarjuna and Krishna, ignited a truly shocking fan war. Passions spiraled into destruction as rival fans brazenly burned a star’s cutouts – an unprecedented, jarring incident in Tollywood history.

Clashing Fans, Burning Cutouts

Shocking: Krishna Fans Burned Nagarjuna’s Cutouts! The Biggest Fan War in the Industry!! Fan wars have always been a hot topic in Tollywood. While recently these conflicts have become more prevalent on social media—where idle individuals argue over whose hero is ‘greater,’ resorting to abusive language and insults for sadistic pleasure—back then, fan wars often meant physical altercations and clashes near theaters. One such major incident, truly shocking for involving fans of two star heroes clashing and burning cutouts over a single film, occurred during the release of the multi-starrer Varasudu. Released in 1993, Varasudu starred Nagarjuna and Krishna together. This film, a remake of the Hindi blockbuster Phool Aur Kaante, was produced by Murali Mohan and directed by E.V.V. Satyanarayana.

Interestingly, Murali Mohan initially intended to play Krishna’s role but withdrew due to a ‘flop sentiment.’ Krishna himself initially refused the father’s role. After other actors were considered without success, the script was modified to include “elevation scenes” for Krishna’s character, and he eventually accepted upon request. At the film’s opening, Nagarjuna’s fans notably led the inaugural clap. The movie was shot in approximately 92 days with a substantial budget of about 2.5 crores for its time, releasing on May 5, 1993.

Despite receiving super hit talk, fan clashes quickly erupted. Being a multi-starrer featuring two top heroes, intense competition and conflicts arose among fans at all theaters, particularly over banners and cutouts. Krishna’s fans were especially angered by scenes where Krishna’s role had less prominence, where Nagarjuna disrespectfully referred to Krishna, and, most notably, where Nagarjuna grabbed Krishna’s collar. This led to Ghattamaneni (Krishna’s family) fans demanding the removal of these specific scenes and the addition of a song and a new fight sequence featuring Krishna. With these demands, fans created a ruckus near theaters. In many locations, Nagarjuna’s cutouts were burned, and in some theaters, property like boxes was smashed, leading to major fan clashes.

Controversy to Blockbuster Hit

The extensive conflicts prompted Krishna, Nagarjuna, and E.V.V. Satyanarayana to issue a joint press statement to provide an explanation. Ultimately, producers and directors made significant changes: some objectionable scenes were cut from the film, and a new fight sequence featuring Krishna was specifically shot and added to the film’s climax. Only after these changes were implemented did Krishna’s fans calm down.

Despite all these controversies and conflicts, Varasudu became a massive hit. Made with 2.5 crores, it collected almost 6.5 crores and ran for 100 days at the box office. This incident highlights that while the venues for fan wars may have shifted from physical altercations at theaters to online battles on social media, the underlying phenomenon of senseless fan wars persists, often despite the heroes themselves being united and on good terms. You’ve now learned about the infamous fan wars surrounding the Varasudu film. Stay tuned for more interesting Tollywood updates like these.

Looking Ahead

The Varasudu incident proves fan wars persist, evolving from streets to screens, despite our heroes’ unity. When will Tollywood’s passionate fans channel this fervent energy into collective celebration, not senseless division? Our industry’s harmonious future depends on it. Let’s hope.
