A fierce ‘fans war’ between supporters of legendary actors Nagarjuna and Krishna recently sent shockwaves through Tollywood. This surprising conflict, creating a massive sensation, is deeply rooted in the enigmatic ‘Varasudu’ controversy. What truly ignited this intense rivalry? Join us as we uncover the real story behind this unprecedented clash.

Fan Wars: Old School to Social Media

Shocking: A fierce war broke out between Nagarjuna and Krishna fans, causing a sensation in Tollywood! Do you know the real story behind this biggest conflict? Let’s dive into the details now.

Wars between star heroes’ fans are common. In the past, fans of major heroes frequently engaged in fights and created a ruckus. However, times have changed. Social media wars have escalated significantly, with “anti-teams” forming and trolling heroes becoming more prevalent. Lately, social media is rife with fan wars as some fans critique and argue with each other to prove their hero’s superiority. In the past, the situation was a bit different. Back then, fan disagreements often occurred directly at theaters, leading to arguments escalating into physical altercations. Typically, fan wars involved star heroes like NTR – ANR, NTR – Krishna, Chiranjeevi – Balayya, Balayya – Nagarjuna, Venkatesh, NTR, Mahesh, Allu Arjun, and Prabhas. The battles between Mega and Nandamuri fans, in particular, need no special mention.

But did you know that a major conflict also erupted between the fans of Superstar Krishna and King Nagarjuna? This war didn’t happen long ago; it occurred during the time of ‘Varasudu’, the multi-starrer film they co-starred in.

Nagarjuna and Krishna acted together in this movie, which was a remake of the blockbuster Hindi film ‘Phool Aur Kaante’. Murali Mohan produced the film, and EVV Satyanarayana directed it. The film’s shooting was completed in just 90 days. Initially, Murali Mohan had intended to play the role that Krishna eventually took. However, he abandoned the idea due to a sentiment associated with a string of previous flops. When Krishna was later approached, he initially did not agree to play the father’s role. After attempts to cast other actors proved unsuccessful, some changes were made to the script, adding “elevations” to give Krishna’s character more prominence. Following this, he accepted the request. The film’s inauguration was also unique: shooting began with Nagarjuna’s fan club president sounding the clap. Made with a total budget of two and a half crore rupees, it was considered a big-budget movie for its time.

Varasudu: Superstar Clash and Resolution

‘Varasudu’ was released on May 5, 1993, and immediately received positive reviews. However, conflicts among fans began at the same time. As it was a multi-starrer featuring two prominent heroes, competition arose between their fan bases regarding the placement of banners and cutouts at theaters. Certain scenes also became a source of controversy. Krishna’s fans were displeased that his character had less prominence, that Nagarjuna addressed Krishna using informal and somewhat disrespectful terms (“Vaadu, Veedu” – roughly “he, this guy”), and that there was a scene where Nagarjuna grabbed Krishna’s collar. Consequently, Ghanttamaneni fans demanded the removal of these scenes and the addition of a song and a fight sequence for Krishna. Not only did they make demands, but fans also staged protests at theaters. In some places, Nagarjuna’s cutouts were burned, and in others, boxes inside theaters were smashed.

As the situation grew tense, Krishna, Nagarjuna, and director EVV Satyanarayana jointly released a press statement to provide clarification. To appease Krishna’s fans and resolve the dispute, some scenes were removed from the film. Additionally, a new fight scene featuring Krishna was filmed and added to the climax. Subsequently, the fans’ anger subsided.

Despite all these controversies, ‘Varasudu’ became a super hit. Produced with a budget of approximately two and a half crore rupees, the film grossed around six and a half crore rupees and ran for 100 days.

Looking Ahead

Varasudu’s massive 6.5 crore success proved content reigns supreme over fan rivalries. While controversies ignite, the audience’s box office verdict is final. This incident powerfully reminds our industry: genuine cinematic appeal transcends all ‘wars,’ a timeless Tollywood truth.
