Big Gross, Bigger Loss
The closing collection figures for Ram Charan‘s film ‘Peddi’ have been released, revealing a shocking outcome: despite grossing ₹341 crores over 35 days, the producer incurred a significant loss of ₹50 crores. This financial hit was notably exacerbated by the release of Samantha’s film, ‘Maa Inti Bangaram,’ which ironically ended up making an equivalent profit.
Directed by Buchibabu Sana, ‘Peddi’ starred Ram Charan, with Janhvi Kapoor as the heroine, and featured Jagapathi Babu and Shivraj Kumar in pivotal roles. Produced jointly by Vriddhi Cinemas, Mythri Movies, and Sukumar Writings, with Venkata Satish Kilaru as the producer, the film was a crucial release for Ram Charan following the massive disaster ‘Game Changer.’ Released on June 4th last year amidst high expectations, ‘Peddi’ initially garnered a mixed response from audiences.
The movie showed good momentum in its first and second weeks, but collections significantly dropped from the third week onwards. After 35 days in theaters, ‘Peddi’ accumulated a gross of ₹341 crores. This figure included an India gross of ₹288 crores (with an India net collection of ₹243.83 crores) and ₹53 crores from overseas markets, resulting in an approximate net share of ₹170 crores. However, according to trade sources, the film needed to collect ₹220 crores to break even. This means ‘Peddi’ fell short by ₹50 crores, concluding with a loss of this amount for the producer. Although the team continued to promote ‘Peddi’ as a blockbuster, current collections are barely enough to cover theater expenses, leaving no share for the producer after accounting for exhibitors and distributors. Adding to ‘Peddi’s woes, Samantha’s film ‘Maa Inti Bangaram,’ released concurrently, severely impacted its box office performance, causing its collections to plummet.
Equal and Opposite Fortunes
‘Peddi’ has now been almost removed from theaters, playing in fewer than 10 venues with perhaps just one show per day, effectively marking its closing stage. In stark contrast, ‘Maa Inti Bangaram’ achieved astounding collections, grossing over ₹90 crores. This film not only broke even before its release but also accumulated ₹5 crores in profits from pre-release business alone. With an additional theatrical share of ₹45 crores, Samantha’s film ultimately generated a total profit of ₹50 crores. It is a remarkable coincidence that Ram Charan’s film incurred losses and Samantha’s film reaped profits, with the amounts being precisely equal.
Despite the financial disappointment, Ram Charan’s performance in ‘Peddi’ received considerable praise, with many suggesting it was worthy of a national award.
Looking Ahead
While Peddi’s box office tale might be bittersweet for our Megapower Star, Ram Charan’s award-worthy performance has truly cemented his artistic prowess. This financial setback will surely be dwarfed by the critical acclaim and future projects, reminding us that genuine talent always prevails in Telugu cinema.
