R. Madhavan finds himself apologizing for ‘Dhurandhar 2’ even before its release. The film, predicted to be a box office hit, has instead sparked controversy over a cigarette scene. Strong objections from the Sikh community, who found the scene hurtful, prompted Madhavan to issue an apology. This unexpected hurdle has certainly cast a shadow.

Cigarette Scene Ignites Controversy

A cigarette controversy has engulfed the film ‘Dhurandhar 2,’ leading to actor R. Madhavan offering an apology. Even before its release, the film has found itself embroiled in strong objections from the Sikh community, who deem a particular scene hurtful to their sentiments. While ‘Dhurandhar 2’ is anticipated to create box office records, controversies are also hounding the film.

News recently emerged of the film running into legal trouble. Following a complaint by the Sikh community alleging a scene disrespects ‘Gurbani,’ the sacred hymns of Sikhs, an FIR was registered in Mumbai against the film’s team and actor R. Madhavan.

In their complaint, Sikh community leaders urged for religious sentiments to be respected, demanded the controversial scene’s removal, and called for action against those responsible. They are demanding an immediate apology from the film’s team.

Actor R. Madhavan responded to this controversy via Instagram, not only explaining the scene but also offering an apology. The core of the controversy revolves around a specific scene where Madhavan’s character recites verses from the Dasham Granth Sahib – ‘Shura So Pechaniye, Jo Lade Deen Ke Heth. Purja Purja Kat Mare, Kabhu Na Chadde Khet’ – while smoking a cigarette. Sikh community leaders have expressed strong outrage, stating that this is contrary to Sikh traditions and insults Guru Gobind Singh.

Madhavan Offers Apology Amidst Row

In his explanation of this scene, R. Madhavan stated: “On behalf of the Dhurandhar 2 team, we thank you for the love and affection you are showing for our film. We don’t even know how to express our happiness; the film is being embraced so wonderfully. However, a matter has recently come to our attention.”

He continued: “There’s a scene in the film where I recite some verses from Guru Gobind Singh’s ‘Dasham Granth.’ It has come to our attention that some people were hurt by the perception that I was smoking a cigarette at that time. However, I want to clarify something here: that is not true; a small misunderstanding occurred. Director Aditya Dhar is very cautious about such matters. Before filming that scene, he told me, ‘You must stop smoking the cigarette before reciting these lines. No smoke should come from your mouth, no smoke should be visible anywhere on screen, and the cigarette should not be in your hand. This is because those verses are extremely sacred.’ I followed his instructions precisely.”

Madhavan added: “If you observe that scene carefully, no smoke comes from my mouth, there is no smoke visible anywhere in the frame, and the cigarette is not in my hand until the scene ends. We did not make this film to hurt anyone’s feelings. We have always supported and greatly respected the Sikh community. In fact, before every film release, I visit the Golden Temple. Therefore, we had no intention of hurting anyone, nor did we do so. I reiterate: the cigarette was in my hand at the start of the scene because the character smokes. But I stopped smoking before the dialogue began. So, throughout that entire scene, there is no smoke or cigarette. If, knowingly or unknowingly, we have hurt anyone, please forgive us. We are all with you. Everyone be happy. Happy Dhurandhar 2.”

It remains to be seen whether this controversy will subside with Madhavan’s apology. We will have to wait and see what further developments unfold after the film’s release.
