Deity Insult: Ranveer’s “Kantara” Outrage

Ranveer’s Controversial Remarks on ‘Kantara’! Apologies in High Court, an Unexpected Turn! Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh’s comments on the film ‘Kantara’ sparked controversy. Consequently, he issued an apology in the Karnataka High Court. Bollywood star actor Ranveer Singh recently found himself in trouble due to remarks he made at an international event. Speaking at the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa in 2025, Ranveer Singh praised Rishab Shetty’s performance and the film ‘Kantara’. However, in doing so, he referred to the sacred ‘Chaamundi Daivam‘ from the film as a “female ghost”. These comments deeply hurt the sentiments of the people of coastal Karnataka. An FIR was registered against him in Bengaluru for allegedly insulting a deity.

Ranveer approached the Karnataka High Court, seeking to quash the case. A bench led by Justice M. Nagaprasanna heard the case. During the hearing, the judge expressed displeasure over Ranveer Singh’s conduct. The court warned, “You are a celebrity. Millions of people follow you. In such circumstances, you must consider how careful your words should be. Calling a sacred deity a ghost is an unforgivable offense. If you don’t know, you should learn, but making such comments is inappropriate.” Ranveer’s lawyer argued that the comments were made out of admiration for the actor and not intentionally, adding that he had already apologized via Instagram.

Court Orders Apology, Ranveer Visits Temples

During the hearing, Ranveer Singh revealed a significant decision to the court. Realizing that a mere apology on social media would not suffice to alleviate the devotees’ distress, he promised to personally visit pilgrimage sites in Karnataka. He stated that he would file an affidavit in court expressing regret for his remarks. Ranveer’s lawyer informed the court that he would visit the famous Chamundi Hills temple in Mysuru and offer apologies to the Goddess and local traditions there. Taking this into consideration, the High Court ordered the police not to take any harsh measures against Ranveer. The next hearing was adjourned to April 10.

This incident once again underscored the immense responsibility artists and celebrities bear when speaking about the cultures and beliefs of other regions. It remains to be seen how Ranveer Singh will express his remorse as per the court’s directives. Ranveer Singh’s acknowledgment of his mistake, his apology to the court, and his willingness to visit temples demonstrate his humility. Let’s hope this controversy subsides.

Looking Ahead

Ranveer’s apology in Karnataka HC underscores the paramount importance of respecting our sacred traditions. We trust his pledged temple visits will deepen his understanding of our unique culture. This incident is a crucial reminder for all artists: sensitivity towards regional beliefs is non-negotiable. May this foster more mindful cultural engagement.
