Key Points
Atheist Sobhan Babu embraced Bhagavad Gita daily. A spiritual paradox revealed!
Guarding glamour: Sobhan Babu rejected aging roles, even blank checks!
Eco-hero: Sobhan Babu enshrined a neem tree, building his room around it!
Unseen transformation: Director blocked Sobhan Babu’s de-glam role debut!
Nature Lover & Personal Sanctuary
Reports about his romance with Jayalalithaa also circulated strongly back then. Interestingly, despite reportedly having no belief in God and never visiting a temple even once in his life, Sobhan Babu greatly loved listening to the Bhagavad Gita. He never criticized those who believed in God, and greatly enjoyed listening to Ghantasala’s devotional Bhagavad Gita, reportedly even reciting one shloka daily.
His residence in the east-facing corner of Rajaram Mohan Nagar Main Center in Nungambakkam, Chennai, comprised two houses named Shanthi and Prashanthi. While he lived with his family in Shanthi, Sobhan Babu reportedly used Prashanthi for office work and makeup. There, on either side of his makeup mirror, he would keep photos of his sister and grandfather. In the hall, colorful photos of the Dasavataram get-ups from the film ‘Devaalayam’ adorned the walls. In his personal chamber, instead of photos of deities, there were consecutive photos of Gandhi, Jesus Christ, Buddha, and Mother Teresa.
Additionally, Sobhan Babu dearly cherished a photo of a junior actress who had passed away, shown holding an umbrella next to him in the film ‘Balaramakrishnulu’, and a photo of NTR was reportedly always on his table. Sobhan Babu was a great lover of nature. It’s noteworthy that he grew trees in the vacant space in front of his house instead of constructing buildings. Furthermore, without cutting down a large neem tree inside his chamber, Sobhan Babu built a room around it by fencing it. He reportedly used to get angry if anyone plucked leaves or flowers from those trees.
To be remembered only as a handsome actor and a hero, Sobhan Babu decided to quit films as he aged, before his stardom waned. That’s why, even after he distanced himself from the industry, no matter how many directors offered millions or came to his home to plead, Sobhan Babu stubbornly refused to play old-age roles, father roles, or grandfather roles. He wanted his fans to remember him only as a handsome actor and a hero. He refused Trivikram’s offer for Mahesh Babu’s character in the film ‘Athadu’ despite persistent efforts, and even rejected Murali Mohan’s offer of a blank check.
Controlling His On-Screen Legacy
In his final days, when media tried to interview him, Sobhan Babu never allowed them near his home. There are many interesting facts about Sobhan Babu’s life. Even when he played poor characters in films, Sobhan Babu reportedly appeared glamorous in those simple clothes. He never played de-glamorous roles; in fact, people came to theaters specifically to witness his glamour, and it was often because of his glamour that many of his films were successful.
However, in only one film in his career, ‘Padaharella Vayasu’, an evergreen film even today, he almost appeared in a completely de-glamorous role, wearing shorts. In this film, directed by K. Raghavendra Rao, the innocent role of ‘Chandigadu’ Gopalakrishna, played by Chandramohan, was initially meant for Sobhan Babu. Although Sobhan Babu had agreed to the role and even worn shorts, K. Raghavendra Rao reportedly didn’t like seeing the handsome actor in such a manner. Feeling it wasn’t right, Raghavendra Rao approached him, expressed his discomfort, and subsequently cast Chandramohan in the role. Even after casting Chandramohan, they opted for a ‘panche’ (dhoti) instead of extensive shorts. Raghavendra Rao once mentioned that the ‘panche’ costume they bought for that role cost only 40 rupees. Thus, the opportunity to see Sobhan Babu in a de-glamorous role was ultimately missed.
Shanthakumari, the wife who stood as a pillar of support in the life of such a legendary star, passed away on July 10 at a private hospital in Chennai due to health issues. She married Sobhan Babu on May 15, 1958. It is noteworthy that ever since her marriage, she always stayed away from publicity, regardless of how big a star he became. Living a simple and unpretentious life, she encouraged and supported her husband’s career. After Sobhan Babu’s sudden death from a heart attack in 2008, she continued to live peacefully with her children in their Chennai home. The couple had four children: a son, Karuna Seshu, and daughters Mrudula, Prashanthi, and Nivedita. Her cremation was understood to take place amidst family members. These fascinating details from Sobhan Babu’s life, including his acting in over 230 films, made his cinematic journey even more interesting, and on the occasion of his wife’s demise, more facets of his life have come to light.

Shanthakumari Garu’s quiet departure truly unveils a new dimension to Sobhan Babu’s iconic life. Her unwavering support, now understood more deeply, underscores the personal sacrifices behind cinematic greatness.
