Squint: A Unique Strength in a Love Story

Shocking: Luck with a Squint! The blockbuster hit ‘Sri Chidambaram Garu’ is a feel-good love story that powerfully showcases the challenges a person faces in life due to a squint. This amazing film vividly portrays the suffering endured because of a minor physical imperfection, making one wonder if a love story could also be depicted this way. From start to finish, every character feels true to life, bringing the narrative alive. While words of sympathy are common for such imperfections, director Sri Chidambaram Garu deserves immense congratulations for transforming this perceived flaw into a source of inspiration, proving that a squint is not a disability but a unique strength. It’s a film that can be comfortably watched with family, as the actors, despite their ordinary names, truly embodied their roles. The film brilliantly explores the hero’s journey, focusing on the difficulties he faces due to his squint and the societal challenges he encounters. While a squint is certainly not the absence of limbs or speech, it is presented as a minor flaw that shapes his experience, leading to humiliation, love, determination, and ultimately, success. This is a deeply emotional, feel-good love story.

Salman’s Emotional Journey in his Love Story!
The hero, Salman, endures profound struggles. As a child, his father takes out business loans, incurs losses, and, unable to repay them, tragically takes his own life to escape public humiliation. Young Salman, already bothered by his squint, pledges to repay his father’s debts in front of the entire village. However, his squint becomes a constant source of humiliation from schoolmates and teachers alike. His given name, Salman, fades into obscurity; almost everyone, except his mother, calls him Chidambaram. This pain is etched deeply in his heart. He constantly wears his deceased father’s spectacles, even while working with soil, believing that these humiliations are inevitable if his eyes are visible. A village girl, captivated by Salman’s independence and self-reliance, falls in love with him and wishes to marry him. Their relationship blossoms as he builds a bathroom at her house, evolving from shared tea and meals to walking arm-in-arm. One day, knowing she reciprocates his feelings, Salman proposes. However, she presents a condition: she asks him to remove his glasses and propose while looking directly into her eyes. When he flatly refuses, she offers powerful motivational words, then asks, ‘Do you like yourself?’ Salman, misunderstanding her intent, assumes she is mocking his squint. Driven by a determination to rid himself of this flaw, Salman travels to Rajahmundry, believing healing conventions there will correct his squint. He borrows one lakh rupees from his village and hands it to the organizers, only to realize he has been cheated. Overcome by despair, he attempts suicide by jumping off the Rajahmundry bridge but is saved by bystanders. It is then that someone remarks, ‘Oh, you have a squint… that’s why you’re lucky’ – his first positive experience related to his eyes. As he contemplates how to return home, he encounters a childhood friend who forcibly takes him home and introduces him to his wife, a very short woman. The friend explains their happy and contented life, built on love. Salman confides in his friend about the deception he suffered. Meanwhile, the heroine, realizing the true situation, travels to Rajahmundry to search for Salman but returns to her village, unable to find him.

Back in his village, emboldened by his friend’s words, Salman realizes the profound wisdom in what the heroine had said. He approaches her mother even before speaking to the heroine, seeking permission to marry her daughter, provided she approves. The heroine’s mother, recognizing Salman’s unwavering determination to stand on his own feet and repay his father’s debts, declares she couldn’t possibly find a better match for her daughter. The film’s core message beautifully resonates: disability is no barrier to love or life.
