Thief, Snake, Priest: Sukumar’s Secret
Shocking Twist: A Thief, a Snake, a Temple Priest… They Changed Sukumar‘s Life! Shall we delve into a shocking incident that occurred in the life of creative director Sukumar? Let’s see how the convergence of a thief, a snake, and a temple priest transformed Sukumar’s journey!
We’ve all seen the sensations created by creative genius Sukumar with `Pushpa 2`. Director Rajamouli once commented at an event that Sukumar is a genius, his ideas are on a very high level, and if he were to bring his ideas down to earth and make a film, none of them could stand before him. Sukumar proved those comments true. With films like `Rangasthalam` and `Pushpa`, he gave Indian cinema a taste of his prowess. `Pushpa 2` currently ranks as the third highest-grossing film in India.
Before becoming a director, Sukumar was a mathematics teacher, working as a lecturer in college. Driven by an interest in writing and storytelling, he entered the film industry. With `Arya`, he debuted as a director and established himself as a trendsetter.
However, a captivating story from his village, unfolding behind the scenes, profoundly shaped him into the celebrated director he is today. Indeed, a thief, a snake, and a temple priest were central to an incident that changed Sukumar’s life forever. To understand what exactly happened, we must journey to Mattaparru village in East Godavari district, Sukumar’s hometown.
During his childhood, an extraordinary incident unfolded there, involving the supposed manifestation of Lord Venkateswara. Could this be the real story behind the creative impetus for his films, even `Pushpa 2`’s success?
Village Legend Ignites Creative Genius
A short distance from Sukumar’s house stood two palm trees. Between them lay a snake pit, a place no one dared to venture due to the resident snake. Unexpectedly, a thief from the village began meditating under a tree near this very snake pit. On a nearby stone, an outline resembling Lord Venkateswara appeared, leading people to believe the deity had manifested. The snake from the pit would frequently roam near that stone, even approaching and coiling around the meditating thief, who, reportedly, remained absorbed and paid no attention. Sukumar himself witnessed the snake emerging from a nearby pond to coil around stones and idols.
Around the same time, a child was born in the village whose head was reportedly three times larger than normal, and whose hands bore red conch shell markings. These occurrences fueled the rumor that God himself had appeared.
The thief gradually transformed into a Swami, or holy man, drawing people from other villages to witness the stones and the child, offering generous donations. With the received donations, a temple was eventually built, with Sukumar also involved in its construction.
Workers for the temple were paid, and a BA-educated priest arrived to serve there. Sukumar, seeking tuition from this priest, discovered his habit of compiling serials from weekly magazines into books. These books, which the priest shared with Sukumar, proved immensely useful. Sukumar stated that, in a way, he gained his literacy there, attributing this crucial development to the snake, the thief, and the temple priest. He revealed that without the temple, the snake, and the thief, he wouldn’t be who he is today, sharing these details in an interview during the `Rangasthalam` movie’s release.
Currently, Sukumar is preparing the script for his upcoming film with Ram Charan, expected to commence in the second half of this year. This profound childhood incident undeniably changed Sukumar’s life, serving as the very wellspring of the unique creativity evident in his films. Stay tuned for more interesting facts.
