This candid interview offers a rare glimpse into the mind of a powerhouse performer.
Haunted by Triple Roles
Tamil star hero Chiyaan Vikram recently made sensational revelations about the struggles he faced during the making of his iconic film ‘Aparichitudu,’ admitting that “That film haunted me!” Known for his extraordinary acting prowess and portrayal of diverse characters in the Indian film industry, with performances in films like ‘I’ and ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ garnering significant praise, Vikram shared in a recent interview with popular YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia that ‘Aparichitudu’ remains one of the most difficult roles of his career. The film, instrumental in bringing him immense fame, holds a unique position as a significant challenge he encountered.
In ‘Aparichitudu,’ Vikram essayed three distinct characters with different personalities simultaneously: Ramanujam, a calm lawyer; Remo, a stylish model; and Aparichitudu, an individual confronting injustice. He explained the immense effort required, stating, “The film ‘Aparichitudu’ disturbed me a bit, because it had three characters. Now, I can switch between characters easily. But back then, it wasn’t that simple. First, we would play Ramanujam’s character, then Remo’s character, and then Aparichitudu’s character.” These roles demanded complete transformation of his performance every time, with unique body languages and emotions for each.
Pigeons and Peace: His Escape
Vikram further revealed the difficulty of stepping out of character during shooting. He described his unique method for mental calm during the demanding schedule: “We used to shoot for 15 days, and then we would prepare for another 15 days. So, it was 15 days of work and a 15-day break. You won’t believe it, but I used to go and sit on my home terrace.” He elaborated on this period of isolation: “There, I used to raise pigeons. I would let them fly and watch them all day. I used to have breakfast, lunch, and dinner there. There was a cot, and I would lie on it and rest. I would stay there until evening. I wouldn’t talk to anyone because it was difficult to come out of the character.” This intensive personal retreat was his way of disengaging from the demanding roles.
Released in 2005 and directed by renowned S. Shankar, this psychological action story achieved massive success, with Sada, Vivek, Nassar, Nedumudi Venu, and Prakash Raj playing important roles. ‘Aparichitudu’ undoubtedly became a milestone in Vikram’s career. However, hearing about the profound hardships he endured during its making, straight from his own words, is astonishing and stands as a powerful testament to his unwavering dedication and the immense effort he poured into embodying each distinct character.
