Rajini’s Surprise Directorial Role
It’s a sensational and truly shocking fact about Superstar Rajinikanth: the legendary actor once served as an Assistant Director for a single film. This surprising twist in his illustrious career unfolded on the sets of the 1988 film ‘Guru Sishyan’.
Rajinikanth, whose journey began as a bus conductor before he trained at the Adyar Film Institute and debuted as an actor in 1975’s ‘Apoorva Raagangal’, went on to achieve superstardom through over 170 films, playing heroes, villains, and supporting roles. While he penned the story and screenplay for some movies like ‘Baba’ and ‘Valli’, and even sang ‘Adikkudu Kuliru’ in ‘Mannan’, he never took on a full-fledged directing role. This makes his brief stint as an Assistant Director, for just two days, a truly unique and little-known chapter in his filmography.
‘Guru Sishyan‘ was directed by S.P. Muthuraman, a director with whom Rajinikanth delivered numerous hits. The film featured a stellar cast including Rajinikanth, Prabhu, Gautami, Seetha, Cho Ramaswamy, Pandiyan, Radharavi, Ravichandran, Sendamarai, Vinu Chakravarthy, and Manorama. Produced by Meena Panju Arunachalam with music by Ilaiyaraaja, ‘Guru Sishyan’ became a landmark film.
Work Ethic Beyond Superstardom
For this project, Rajinikanth had given a 25-day call sheet. The shooting took place at Brindavan Gardens in Mysore, where after completing a song featuring Rajini and Gautami, the crew moved on to film another song with the second leads, Prabhu and Seetha. During this time, Rajinikanth found himself waiting idly in his room. Director S.P. Muthuraman, noticing his lead actor with time on his hands, suggested, “Why are you waiting here? If you wish, you can go to Chennai and come back. I will finish this song in the meantime.” Rajini, however, replied, “I have given a 25-day call sheet for this film. Don’t waste my two days. Please reconsider.” Despite Rajini’s concern, Muthuraman reassured him, “It’s fine, I will complete the film by the promised date. You can go and come back.”
Nevertheless, the very next day, Rajinikanth went directly to the set where the Prabhu-Seetha song was being filmed. He approached the director with a humble request: “I don’t want to sit idle in my room while drawing a salary. So, please give me some work for today and tomorrow. I will do it.” Astonished by his superstar’s dedication, Muthuraman told him, “You can do whatever work you like.” Without hesitation, Rajini declared, “I will work as your Assistant Director.”
For the next two days, Rajinikanth diligently served as an Assistant Director for the song ‘Vaa Vaa Vanji Ilamane…’, being filmed on Prabhu and Seetha. This extraordinary incident of Rajinikanth working as an Assistant Director created a sensation in Tollywood and remains a testament to his unparalleled work ethic.
Looking Ahead
This incredible revelation isn’t just a shocking twist; it’s a profound testament to Rajinikanth’s unparalleled work ethic and humility. That Thalaivar, even then, dedicated himself fully, speaks volumes. A timeless lesson, it solidifies why his superstardom endures, inspiring generations across South India.
