CSK Sued for Unauthorized Rajini Music Use
A major sensation has erupted in Tollywood as Sun TV delivers a stunning blow to CSK, initiating legal troubles over the unauthorized use of music from the films ‘Jailer’ and ‘Coolie’. This controversy, centering on copyright infringement, has quickly become a hot topic. Even before the IPL excitement commenced, a significant legal battle ignited between the entertainment and sports worlds.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) sparked this dispute by using Sun Pictures’ copyrighted music in their new advertisements without permission. Specifically, CSK’s commercial videos incorporated Rajini’s famous ‘Hukum’ dialogue from ‘Jailer’ and the ‘Coolie’ teaser music.
Rs. 1 Crore Claim; CSK Pulls Infringing Ads
In response, Sun TV filed a petition in the Madras High Court, asserting that the use of music from ‘Jailer’, ‘Jailer 2’, and ‘Coolie’ for commercial advertisements without their consent constitutes a violation of copyright law. Sun Pictures demanded Rs. 1 crore in compensation for this unauthorized usage and requested details of the income generated from the infringing ads.
The court, upon hearing the case, issued notices to CSK. During today’s hearing in the Madras High Court, CSK’s lawyer stated that following the allegations of unauthorized use of the film songs, the videos in question have been completely removed. The court has since ordered a further hearing in this ongoing dispute between Sun Pictures and CSK.
Looking Ahead
While CSK has removed the videos, the fight for Thalaivar’s tunes continues. This high-stakes battle, between our beloved Yellow Army and Kollywood’s giants, firmly reminds us of copyright’s paramount importance. The Madras High Court’s final ruling will set a vital precedent for digital content usage across our vibrant South.
