The Supreme Court has delivered a sensational decision, staying the Telangana High Court‘s order on movie ticket price hikes. This offers significant relief to Tollywood producers. Mythri Movie Makers had challenged the High Court’s mandate of a 90-day Government Order (GO) before any increase, a move poised to reshape industry economics.
SC Stays Ticket Price Rules
The Supreme Court has delivered a sensational decision regarding movie ticket price hikes, temporarily halting the interim orders issued by the Telangana High Court. This provides significant relief in the ongoing matter of increasing movie ticket prices. Previously, the High Court had mandated that if ticket prices were to be increased, the government must issue an official Government Order (GO) at least 90 days before a film’s release. Challenging this directive, the prominent production house Mythri Movie Makers approached the Supreme Court.
On Friday, a Supreme Court bench comprising Justice J.K. Maheshwari and Justice A.S. Chandurkar heard the petition and temporarily stayed the implementation of the High Court‘s orders. The bench also suggested that the existing ticket pricing system should continue, offering convenience to producers, particularly for organizing premiere shows and implementing price increases when necessary for films scheduled for release soon.
The 90-Day Notice Controversy
The dispute originated during the Sankranti festival when the Principal Secretary of the State Home Department issued a memo allowing increased ticket prices for certain Telugu films. A petition challenging this decision was filed in the High Court. During its hearing, the High Court expressed strong dissatisfaction, questioning how ‘our Shankara Varaprasad Garu’ permitted such hikes despite existing orders against future increases. The court further inquired why its attention was not drawn to the matter when permission was granted to raise ticket prices for ‘Raja Saab’ cinema and a few other films on the same day. Noting that it could consider suo motu the public placement of the memo for ticket price hikes, the High Court subsequently issued its interim orders: any future decision to increase ticket prices must be announced to the public at least 90 days before the film’s release.
However, Mythri Movie Makers challenged these specific High Court orders in the Supreme Court, which has now stayed their implementation. Consequently, the movie ticket pricing system that has been in effect in Telangana until now will continue. With the Supreme Court’s stay, the current system regarding movie ticket prices in Telangana remains in place, though mixed reactions are being expressed on the matter. It remains to be seen what changes will occur in the coming days.
Looking Ahead
The Supreme Court’s stay ensures current movie ticket prices persist in Telangana, offering temporary relief to the film industry. While producers might cheer, the common movie-goer’s concerns remain valid. This legal battle is far from over; we await further developments that will undoubtedly shape our vibrant Telugu cinema market.
