A major revenue dispute is shaking Tollywood, as producers lock horns with the Telangana Film Chamber of Commerce over a contentious new policy. The Active Telugu Film Producers Guild strongly opposes the TFCC’s recently introduced percentage-based screening model, warning it will be detrimental to their interests. Top producers have voiced their collective dissatisfaction, even penning an open letter to the Chamber’s leadership.

TFCC Policy Sparks Producer Outcry

A major dispute has erupted in Tollywood concerning theatre revenue sharing, pitting producers against the Telangana Film Chamber of Commerce (TFCC). The Active Telugu Film Producers Guild has voiced strong opposition to the TFCC’s newly introduced percentage-based screening model, expressing concern that this policy is detrimental to producers. Even top producers are expressing dissatisfaction, with many collectively writing an open letter to the Chamber’s President and Secretary, explicitly objecting to this percentage policy.

Normally, agreements exist between distributors and theatre owners regarding the theatre’s share and the producer’s share of film collections. However, through circulars released on March 25 and April 2, TFCC unilaterally decided that theatre allocation would henceforth be done only through a ‘percentage’ method. Producers argue that this decision will cause them significant losses. They are requesting that the old method, currently in practice in the market, should not be changed but continued, opining that it is inappropriate for the Chamber to make such decisions without proper consultation.

Industry Deadlock Looms Over Film Releases

Producers have categorically stated that there is no question of screening their films in theatres that adopt this new model decided by the Chamber. Almost all top producers in Tollywood have participated in this protest. Prominent entities such as Mythri Movie Makers (Ravi Shankar), People Media Factory (Vishwaprasad), Sithara Entertainments (Naga Vamsi), Annapurna Studios (Supriya), and Geetha Arts subsidiaries (Bunny Vasu, SKN) have signed this letter. In addition to these, organizations like Wall Poster Cinema, Shine Screens, and SLV Cinemas have also supported the old method.

With major film releases lined up, the impact of these differences between producers and the Chamber on the industry remains to be seen. This dispute has become a hotly debated topic in Tollywood. It remains to be seen whether this dispute will be resolved through discussions or lead to a deadlock at theatres. If conciliation is not reached, it is likely to affect upcoming film releases. Further clarity on this developing situation is awaited.

Looking Ahead

As crucial releases near, Tollywood faces a decisive moment. Will Producers and the Chamber resolve differences amicably, or will a deadlock darken our screens? This dispute impacts more than just revenue; it’s the heartbeat of our industry at stake. A swift, collaborative resolution is paramount for Tollywood’s vibrant journey forward.
