Varalaxmi Sarathkumar’s latest, ‘Saraswati,’ steps into the mystery genre, opening with a perplexing missing child case and promising unexpected revelations. While hailed as a unique attempt in Telugu cinema, does it truly deliver sustained intrigue? This review dissects the film’s direction, analyses its plot’s twists and turns, and evaluates the cast’s performances.

Engrossing Start, Diminishing Returns

The film opens engagingly, presenting a perplexing mystery around a missing child. With no concrete evidence, the unfolding scenes and unexpected twists—particularly the shocking revelations about who Lakshmi and Saraswati truly are—prove captivating, even surprising the judge and lawyers involved. However, this initial intrigue diminishes once the child’s disappearance is revealed, making subsequent events predictable. Despite attempts at twists and turns, they often fall flat, lacking excitement due to a generic plot where the story’s direction becomes easily guessable early on. While “Saraswati” can be considered a unique attempt in Telugu cinema, featuring a good interval twist and a strong climax, the screenplay struggles to maintain suspense. Prakash Raj‘s character, for instance, starts intriguingly but quickly turns generic, and the second half proceeds with similar, predictable turns. The film’s narrative isn’t projected effectively, constantly failing to build suspense. Even scenes involving three murders appear illogical, and the ensuing courtroom arguments lack the usual excitement expected in such dramas, feeling flat despite a decent underlying story.

Nevertheless, the court arguments regarding atrocities against women and the judge’s verdict are impressive.

Varalaxmi delivers a nuanced and convincing performance as Lakshmi, excelling in scenes where she suppresses her pain to fight for the case and commits murders. Her ability to excel as an actress while also directing and producing is noteworthy. Prakash Raj, as lawyer Ramanujan, does a good job driving the film, and Rao Ramesh impresses throughout his screen time as the judge. Murali Sharma performs well as the police officer. Radhika and Nazar as doctors, along with Tulasi, Saptagiri, Getup Sreenu, Jeeva, Priyamani, and Kishore, all impress within the scope of their respective roles. The girl portraying Saraswati also performs well, making every character captivating.

Strong Performances, Weak Narrative

Technically, Thaman’s background music is good, and AM Edwin Sakay’s camera work is excellent, offering visually appealing shots. Venkat Rajan’s editing is decent, ensuring the film flows smoothly. As a director, Varalaxmi proves her talent, delivering quality filmmaking with excellent visual execution.

However, a stronger narrative would have made the film more consistently engaging, maintained suspense, and resulted in a more fantastic twist. Directed by Varalaxmi Sarathkumar and co-produced by her along with Pooja Sarathkumar under the Dosa Diaries LLP banner, ‘Saraswati’ is a crime thriller that, despite its unique premise, strong performances—especially from Varalaxmi, Prakash Raj, Priyamani, and Rao Ramesh—and good technical execution, struggles to maintain consistent engagement and suspense. The ‘Saraswati’ movie has now been released.

Looking Ahead

‘Saraswati’ offers a unique premise and strong performances, yet struggles with consistent suspense. Varalaxmi’s directorial debut undeniably shows great promise. With sharper narratives, she can truly deliver gripping thrillers, marking her as a promising director for Tamil cinema. A valiant first effort.
