Ghaati Review: Anushka Shetty's Cannabis-Fueled Revenge Saga

Anushka Shetty, our very own Sweety, returns with a bang in “Ghaati,” a gritty revenge saga set against the backdrop of cannabis smuggling in the Eastern Ghats. This Krish Jagarlamudi directorial, from the banners of UV Creations and First Frame Entertainment, sees Anushka as Sheelavathi, a former “Ghaati” turned bus conductor, forced back into the murky world of weed after tragedy strikes. Paired with Vikram Prabhu, and facing off against formidable villains, “Ghaati” promises a high-octane ride through the heart of Andhra-Orissa’s underbelly.

Cannabis Trade’s Grip

“Ghaati,” starring Anushka Shetty and Vikram Prabhu, delves into the world of cannabis smuggling in the Eastern Ghats along the Orissa-Andhra Pradesh border. Presented by UV Creations and produced by Rajeev Reddy and Sai Babu Jagarlamudi under the First Frame Entertainment banner, this Krish Jagarlamudi-directed film follows Sheelavathi (Anushka) and her brother-in-law Desi Raju (Vikram Prabhu), former “Ghaatis”—individuals who harvest and transport cannabis. After promising Desi Raju’s dying father to leave the trade, Sheelavathi becomes a bus conductor and Desi Raju a lab technician. However, they secretly develop a liquid form of the highly prized “Sheelavathi” cannabis strain, amassing a fortune. This attracts the attention of local kingpins, Castrol Naidu (Raveendra Vijay) and Kundula Naidu (Chaitanya Rao), leading to Desi Raju’s murder and Sheelavathi’s quest for revenge. Meanwhile, a police officer (Jagapathi Babu) attempts to crack down on the entire cannabis operation.

While the film initially teases the effects of cannabis, it fails to explore the societal consequences, undermining a late-stage message delivered by Sheelavathi. The first half focuses on the Ghaati lifestyle and a budding romance, while the second half explodes into action-packed revenge, prioritizing Anushka’s powerful presence and visually stunning scenes over emotional depth and narrative complexity. The predictable plot follows a familiar trajectory: someone involved in illegal activities experiences a personal loss and seeks retribution against those in power, all set against the unique backdrop of the cannabis trade. Director Krish’s signature social commentary feels largely absent.

Anushka shines in the action sequences, her performance enhanced by dramatic visuals. Chaitanya Krishna’s portrayal of the antagonist, while effective, suffers from excessive shouting. Ravindra Vijay delivers a solid performance, while Vikram Prabhu convincingly embodies Anushka’s lover. Jagapathi Babu is adequate as the police officer, and Raju Sundaram delivers a commendable performance in a key role.

Revenge in the Ghats

The film’s technical aspects are its greatest strength. The cinematography beautifully captures the Eastern Ghats, showcasing the hills, forests, and caves. While tighter editing could have improved the first half, the overall production value is undeniable.

Despite its visual appeal and strong performances, “Ghaati” falls short of its potential, offering a conventional narrative and a missed opportunity for deeper social commentary. Ultimately, whether this marks another milestone in Anushka Shetty’s career remains to be seen. The film earns a 2.75 rating (based on the included analyst review), but its success will depend on whether the audience is captivated by the plot twists and performances.

Looking Ahead

While Anushka’s commanding presence elevates Ghaati, the predictable storyline and squandered potential for social commentary leave us wanting. Though visually captivating, this cannabis-laced revenge saga might not be the career-defining moment we anticipated. Box office collections will reveal if the twists and turns resonate with the audience, but a stronger narrative could have truly set this film ablaze.
