Hope Amidst Middle-Class Debt
The upcoming film ‘Karmeni Selvam,’ directed by Ram Chakri under the Pathway Productions banner, is set to create a sensation, offering assurance to those burdened by debt. This bilingual film, made in Telugu and Tamil, features distinguished actor Samuthirakani in the protagonist role, with Gautham Vasudev Menon appearing in a crucial character. Lakshmi Priya, Abhinaya, Karthik Kumar, Badava Gopi, Kothandam, Charan Chakravarthy, Shankara Narayan V, and Haritha Parakode play other important roles. The film is scheduled for a grand theatrical release in both languages on April 3rd, distributed by prominent company PVR INOX Pictures. On this occasion, film director Ram Chakri shared key details about the movie.
“The first Telugu film I saw was ‘Arya.’ After that, I watched ‘Anand’ and ‘Godavari.’ That’s when I clearly understood one thing: the Telugu film industry wonderfully embraces two distinct narrative styles. On one hand, there are energetic, commercial films like ‘Arya,’ and on the other, there are heartwarming, realistic stories like Sekhar Kammula sir’s ‘Anand’ and ‘Godavari.’ That balance greatly inspired me,” he revealed. Chakri continued, “I didn’t get the opportunity to work directly with Sekhar Kammula sir. Nevertheless, I consider him my guru and mentor. I learned so much by watching his films. I also extend my gratitude to my directing guru, K.V. Guhan sir. Both of them have been an inspiration to me.”
“As for ‘Karmeni Selvam,’ this film is based on middle-class life. Everyone who watches the film will connect with the story, especially those struggling with debt problems. This film is crafted with a storyline designed to offer courage to families burdened by debt. Debt is common in middle-class families, and we aim to show how it impacts family relationships and the decisions they make. The movie will be very realistic,” he explained.
‘Music as a Service’: A Collaborative Vision
Samuthirakani’s performance is set to vividly portray the struggles and unique emotions of a middle-class husband and father. Gautham Vasudev Menon’s presence in a key role further strengthens the film, and along with him, characters played by Lakshmi Priya and Abhinaya will captivate the audience. Chakri also praised his technical team, stating, “Our technical team provided immense support. Regarding music, we are introducing a new concept for this film. Our music director Ramanujan’s team worked under the name ‘Music as a Service.’ They believed that music is not just the work of the music director or singers, but a collaborative effort involving instrumentalists, sound engineers, mixing teams, and many other technicians. Through this concept, our goal is to give credit to everyone who worked on each song and also to share revenue. This is our small attempt to give recognition to the real heroes behind the music.”
He further added, “Our DOP Yuvaraj Dhakshnamoorthy and editor Jagan have extensive experience. When you see the visuals of this film in the theater, you will understand how grandly the story has been presented. I also extend my special thanks to our producer Arun Rangarajulu sir. He believed in this story and supported us in making a quality film. Through this movie, I wanted to convey an important message: Some elders in families pursue livelihoods abroad, but their families reside here. I sincerely wish that they return at least once or twice a year to meet their families. This film will deeply connect with every middle-class family.” ‘Karmeni Selvam’ is presented as a film that instills confidence in those suffering from the burden of debt, vividly portraying the hardships faced by the middle class. Look forward to this moving story, releasing in theaters on April 3rd.
Looking Ahead
“Karmeni Selvam” is set to be a powerful cinematic voice for our middle-class, instilling hope and courage against debt. As director Selvam wishes, this April 3rd release will deeply connect, urging families to cherish every moment. Expect it to mend hearts and minds, truly reflecting our lives on screen.
