Power Star Pawan Kalyan’s ‘Ustaad Bhagat Singh‘ has seen its box office collections dramatically plummet, leaving distributors reeling from massive losses. Despite a decent Ugadi opening, subsequent sharp drops, battling competition like ‘Durandhar 2’, raise serious questions about its commercial viability and impact on Telugu cinema.

Ustaad’s Box Office Freefall

Pawan Kalyan’s ‘Ustaad Bhagat Singh’ has seen its box office collections plummet, raising concerns of significant losses for distributors. The film, a collaboration between Power Star Pawan Kalyan and director Harish Shankar, garnered a mixed reception upon its recent release during Ugadi. Despite a decent opening day collection of Rs. 34.75 crore, subsequent earnings dropped sharply. Its performance was further hampered by the strong audience preference for the Bollywood movie ‘Durandhar 2’.

On its opening day, the film collected Rs. 34.75 crore in India. However, collections significantly declined to Rs. 9.25 crore on the second day, bringing its total net collection to Rs. 44 crore and gross collection to Rs. 52 crore after two days. The third day saw a drastic plummet, registering only a Rs. 32 lakh share and a total gross collection of Rs. 2.72 crore for that day. This sharp drop meant that despite initial hopes for a surge in weekend collections, it did not materialize.

Financial Disaster Looms Large

Audiences typically hold high expectations for Power Star Pawan Kalyan‘s films, which often feature powerful storylines and command significant demand. Among the films he has done since becoming Deputy CM, only ‘OG’ managed to create a box office sensation. In contrast, ‘Ustaad Bhagat Singh’ has reportedly failed to impress audiences much.

The film’s substantial budget of Rs. 150 crore, encompassing remuneration for actors and technical staff, makes its current performance particularly concerning. ‘Ustaad Bhagat Singh’ had a significant pre-release business, with Nizam theatrical rights sold for Rs. 50 crore, Andhra Pradesh theatrical rights for Rs. 54 crore, and Ceded rights for Rs. 16 crore, totaling Rs. 120 crore in India. Worldwide, it conducted business worth approximately Rs. 137 crore. For the film to be declared a hit, it needs to achieve a target of Rs. 140 crore and collect a gross of Rs. 280 crore. Industry reports suggest that if this downward trend continues, distributors and exhibitors stand to incur substantial losses. Based on current collection trends, significant financial repercussions appear unavoidable, and the film risks severe losses if this situation persists for another week. It remains to be seen if any ‘magic’ can turn the film’s fortunes before then, and whether collections will rebound in the coming days.

Looking Ahead

Ustaad Bhagat Singh’s box office plunge is a stark reality check. Despite Pawan Kalyan’s star power and massive pre-release business, distributors face unavoidable, substantial losses. The ‘magic’ needed is elusive, forcing Tollywood to rethink high-stake projects and the immense pressure on even our biggest stars.
