At this event, Renuka became visibly agitated when confronted by an individual. Recounting the incident, she explained, “I told them I wouldn’t come to that meeting. I clearly told the NGOs that if I speak, I would only invite abuses, and nothing constructive would come out of it. Hundreds of dogs are being brutally killed. They convinced me, saying I had to come. It truly pained me to hear about hundreds of dogs being killed.” She further elaborated on her statements at the conference: “I clearly stated at that press conference that out of 100 dogs, 10 might be rabid, and one should be careful with them. I said that we should consider those ten, but the remaining 90 dogs should not be killed. Did I say anything wrong in that? I didn’t say that all 100 dogs are good, did I? A mistake is a mistake, whether made by humans or dogs.” She lamented that despite her clear message, “stupid YouTube channels and useless Instagram pages” twisted her words and fueled further personal abuse, which has significantly increased after her divorce.

Desai vehemently defended her right to speak, stating, “We have freedom of speech. If I don’t wear good clothes or don’t act well, you can say so. Because that’s freedom of speech. But every time, you bring up my personal life and comment as you please. I’m not just saying this about myself; I’m saying it about everyone.” She questioned the culture of creating anonymous social media accounts to arbitrarily abuse people, challenging trolls to “Just once, question your conscience. Show your parents and siblings what you are doing. Show them on Instagram and YouTube how you are abusing a certain celebrity or politician.” She recounted specific horrifying incidents, including an outsider calling her a ‘buffalo’ at the press conference, which provoked her anger. She noted that instead of acknowledging the provocateur’s fault, people continued to abuse her with obscene language. As the founder of an animal welfare NGO, I speak for them, not for humans. Should I take responsibility for everything that happens in the world? I am not an MLA. You don’t have the courage to question the MLAs and corporators whom you yourselves elected. Why are you asking me about everything? You have no right to ask me. I have an NGO for dogs, and I will speak about them. What is my connection to other issues? Why aren’t you asking about that matter?
