The property dispute involving the late actress Sridevi has taken another significant turn, reaching the Madras High Court. Sridevi, the ‘Athi Lokasundari‘ (celestial beauty) who captivated audiences with her charm, expressions, and acting from Bollywood to Tollywood, requires no special introduction. Having starred with top actors like NTR, ANR, and Chiranjeevi, her sudden death in Dubai shocked everyone. Even years after her demise, her property dispute remains unresolved. This ongoing conflict has now brought the focus to the Madras High Court, with intense suspense surrounding the final verdict and who will receive justice.
Sridevi’s husband, renowned producer Boney Kapoor, along with their daughters Janhvi Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor, have approached the Madras High Court. Boney Kapoor filed a petition alleging that some individuals are illegally occupying their property and causing them distress. The Boney Kapoor family filed a joint petition seeking the dismissal of a civil suit by three individuals claiming rights over approximately 4.7 acres of land in Chengalpattu. After reviewing the matter, the court issued crucial orders. The bench, led by Justice T.V. Tamilselvi, heard this petition and imposed a temporary stay on the proceedings in the local court, providing relief to the Boney Kapoor family. The next hearing has been adjourned to March 26.
Fraudulent Claims Plague Sridevi’s Chennai Land
This dispute originated from a valuable property on East Coast Road in Chennai, which Sridevi legally purchased on April 19, 1988. The original owner of this land was M.C. Sambandha Mudaliar, and Sridevi registered the property based on a 1960 distribution agreement among his family members. The property has been under her family’s possession ever since. However, three individuals, claiming to be Mudaliar’s heirs, asserted rights over this property, thus initiating the dispute. Furthermore, in 2005, these claimants obtained a succession certificate from the Tambaram Tahsildar. However, Boney Kapoor brought to the court’s attention that Mudaliar’s family never actually resided in Tambaram, but rather in Mylapore. One of those claiming to be an heir asserted to be the second wife of Mudaliar’s son. Boney Kapoor’s lawyer, however, argued that this marriage, having taken place while the first wife was alive, was not legally valid, and therefore, they would not have a share in the property according to Hindu succession law.
Considering these facts, Justice N. Anand Venkatesh previously ordered the cancellation of the fraudulent documents bearing the names of those three individuals. Clear instructions were also issued to the Tahsildar of Tambaram Taluk to take an appropriate decision on this matter within four weeks. Therefore, the Boney Kapoor family is now seeking strict action against those who are causing them trouble with fraudulent documents.
