Superstar Mahesh Babu‘s 1 Nenokkadine was an ambitious film many hoped would be a blockbuster, yet it underperformed, sparking endless debate. Now, director Sukumar candidly reveals the surprising reasons behind its commercial fate. Delve into his honest confession to understand why this promising, stylish project ultimately failed to fully connect with audiences, despite all its potential.

Director’s Mistake: How a Blockbuster Flopped

Mahesh Babu’s Unexpected Shock: Do you know the director who turned a blockbuster-potential film into a disaster? Superstar Mahesh Babu has had many hits in his career, as well as some disasters. However, one particular film became a disaster despite having the potential to be a blockbuster. Let’s learn about that film now.

Superstar Mahesh Babu is currently busy with the film ‘Varanasi’, which is being shot at a rapid pace. Director Rajamouli is creating this as an international film. Having made Telugu cinema the ‘face of India’ with ‘Baahubali’, he is now poised to make Indian cinema the face of the international stage. Furthermore, he is going to introduce Telugu cinema to the global market. For this, Mahesh is also working extremely hard on this film with great discipline and rigorous practice. He has completely surrendered himself to Rajamouli during the shooting.

Meanwhile, in Mahesh’s career, there have been many failures alongside his successes. However, 2014 saw some unforgettable disasters. That year, flops like ‘1 Nenokkadine’ and ‘Aagadu’ came back-to-back. In a way, that year was a devastating blow for Mahesh. However, one of these films was supposed to be a hit – a film that could have been a blockbuster if done right. But it turned into a disaster. It failed due to a mistake made by the director, becoming a nightmare. That film was ‘1 Nenokkadine’, directed by Sukumar.

This film stands as one of the biggest disasters in Mahesh’s career. Kriti Sanon starred as the heroine, making her debut on the silver screen with this movie. Mahesh Babu’s son, Gautham, also made his debut as a child artist in it. This psychological action thriller was produced under the banner 14 Reels. The film was released on January 14, 2014, amidst huge expectations, but it failed to impress the audience. It completely disappointed Mahesh’s fans. What the film projected was one thing, but its actual content was another, and the audience didn’t understand it. Consequently, it became a disaster.

Sukumar’s Rise After Failure

Regarding the film’s failure, director Sukumar responded in an interview at the time. He admitted that it was a film that should have been a hit, but it flopped because of him. He also revealed the reason for it. Apparently, he also had another version alongside the one shown in the film. He thought the chosen version would work emotionally. However, he stated that he also had another version which he believed was better, would have elevated the heroism, and would have been well-received by the audience. He somehow thought this emotional angle would work and proceeded with it, but now feels that if he had shot and mixed the other version as well, the film truly would have been a blockbuster.

Sukumar said: “I feel like I somehow made a hit-worthy film (1 Nenokkadine) a flop. Even though it was in my hands, the producers gave me a lot of time; there was no urgency for release. There was another version where the hero was shown to be playing that drama even though he didn’t have a problem himself. Somewhere, I leaned too much into the emotional side. I thought if the hero didn’t have a problem, the emotions would be missed, but that would have actually enhanced the heroism even more. When I mentioned that version, producer Ram kept reminding me (asking, ‘How did you miss this?’). It would have been better if I had shot those scenes as well and reviewed them on the edit table.”

These remarks, made a long time ago, are now going viral on YouTube. After ‘1 Nenokkadine’, Sukumar directed ‘Nannaku Prematho’ with NTR, which performed quite well. This film presented NTR in a completely new light. He then made films like ‘Rangasthalam’, ‘Pushpa’, and ‘Pushpa 2’, becoming a director who rules Indian cinema. Now, he is getting ready for a film with Ram Charan, and there’s a chance this film will go on floors by the end of this year. What do you think of these shocking updates about Mahesh Babu’s film? Stay tuned for more film updates.

Looking Ahead

Sukumar’s viral confession about ‘1 Nenokkadine’ truly highlights a director’s growth trajectory. From that challenging phase with Mahesh Babu, he has since mastered the craft, now ruling Indian cinema. His journey proves that introspection paves the way for monumental success. As he gears up with Ram Charan, we anticipate another groundbreaking hit, further cementing his legendary status.
