South Indian film industry’s beloved Tamannaah Bhatia is now at the centre of a swirling controversy in Karnataka. Her appointment as the face of the iconic Mysore Sandal Soap, a Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited (KSDL) product, has sparked widespread debate. The key question resonating across social media: why a non-Kannada actress for such a revered local brand?

Outsider’s Choice Sparks Local Uproar

Controversy erupted over Tamannaah Bhatia’s selection as the brand ambassador for Mysore Sandal Soap, an iconic product of “Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited” (KSDL). Her appointment stirred a storm in Karnataka, sparking widespread discussion on social media questioning why a non-Kannada actress was chosen when numerous local actors and actresses were available.

Karnataka State Minister M.B. Patil stepped in to clarify the reasons behind the decision, revealing that it was based on significant business considerations. Patil explained that many local actresses are already associated with other brands, making them unavailable. While Deepika Padukone’s name was considered, she was not chosen due to her high remuneration demands. He emphasized that Mysore Sandal Soap’s sales extend beyond Karnataka, with an 8 percent market share in North India, 18 percent in Telangana, and a 1 percent international market share. The government aims to achieve a turnover of Rs. 5000 crores by 2030, and it views Tamannaah’s Pan-India craze and crores of social media followers as a crucial advantageous factor for brand promotions to reach this target.

Pan-India Reach at What Cost?

Despite these explanations, opposition in Karnataka intensified, particularly after reports emerged regarding Tamannaah Bhatia‘s remuneration. While she typically charges up to Rs. 2 or 3 crores for such endorsements, it is reported that she is receiving a whopping Rs. 6.2 crores for promoting this government soap – a fee even higher than what she charges for a single movie. This unexpected payment, combined with her being an outsider, further angered the people of Karnataka, fueling a major uproar.

The Karnataka government, through Minister M.B. Patil, reiterated its stance that Tamannaah is the right choice for the brand’s ambitious growth objectives. However, it remains to be seen if this multi-faceted controversy, encompassing both selection and remuneration, will now subside.

Looking Ahead

While Minister Patil champions growth, the controversy’s many facets – from choice to cost – seem far from settled. For many Kannadigas, Mysore Sandal is a cherished emblem of local pride. The real question remains: can market expansion genuinely appease sentiments so deeply rooted in regional identity?
