The story is set in Hindupur during the Corona pandemic. Haridas (Adivi Sesh) falls in love with Saraswati alias Juliet (Mrunal Thakur) after meeting her at a blood camp. They fall deeply in love. Saraswati’s elder brother, belonging to an upper caste, discovers their relationship. In retaliation, they assault Malli (Kamakshi Bhaskarla), who was sheltering and supporting Haridas. Haridas retaliates by killing Saraswati’s brother and subsequently goes to jail. The twist comes when Juliet herself testifies falsely, implicating Hari as the culprit, accusing him of assaulting Malli and killing her brother who intervened. Heartbroken and enraged, Hari spends 13 years in jail. During this time, the Corona pandemic hits. Escaping from prison, he seeks out his Juliet, only to find she has already remarried and has a daughter. Her husband is hospitalized with a severe heart condition, requiring a heart transplant that costs around one crore rupees. Saraswati is struggling desperately to save her husband. Witnessing her predicament, Haridas is deeply moved. He also personally witnesses the exploitation occurring at Karuna Hospital under the pretext of Corona. Together with Saraswati, he plans a money heist. Does their plan succeed? Do they get caught? What is Hari’s true intention in involving Saraswati? What roles do Prakash Raj and Anurag Kashyap play? What is the real truth Haridas knows about Saraswati? And what sacrifices does Hari make for Juliet, who once betrayed him? These questions are answered in the rest of the film.
Sesh & Mrunal: Chemistry Shines Bright
Until now, Adivi Sesh has not done a full-fledged love story. This marks his first highly emotional romance. The film predominantly highlights the exploitation by hospitals during the Corona pandemic. It also subtly touches upon the disparities between different castes. The movie is action-centric, embodying themes of love, emotion, and fighting for love. It can be considered a novel approach within the love story genre. The idea of the protagonist returning to take revenge on the heroine who betrayed him, only to be moved by her plight and decide to help her, is fresh. The first half primarily showcases the love story between Adivi Sesh and Mrunal Thakur, simultaneously revealing her betrayal. The narrative then follows him in jail, reflecting on his love and her deceit. Subsequently, scenes of his escape from jail, driven by a desire for revenge, stand out as highlights. The use of the song ‘Kannepettaro Kannukottaro’ during these moments is effective, making those scenes intense and impactful. The love story is engaging and quite romantic. The interval sequences deliver a ‘wow’ factor. The second half focuses on the heist, depicting the hero’s reunion with the heroine and her struggles.
Engaging in theft for her and for himself, being pursued by the police and hospital staff, their escape and flight – all while racing forms a central part of the narrative. It is during this time that characters like Prakash Raj, Anurag Kashyap, and Sunil make their entry. As a police officer, Anurag Kashyap attempts to apprehend the hero who has escaped from jail. They uncover some interesting facts about Hari, which prove to be intriguing. A shocking revelation about Mrunal brings about a change in the hero, subsequently altering the nature of his struggle. It becomes very emotional. The climax is presented as heartfelt and highly emotional, concluding at the same intense level. In the second half, Mrunal’s character primarily drives the story, serving as the backbone of the film. What is the twist in the love story with Mrunal Thakur?
Emotional Core: Love, Sacrifice, and Redemption
However, many scenes in the first half feel like ‘cut and paste,’ progressing as if unrelated to one another. They cause confusion, and the emotional depth in the love story is missing. The dialogues are incomprehensible, and the screenplay feels somewhat chaotic. There’s a lack of clarity regarding the intended message, and many scenes lack logic. The second half is somewhat better, but even the hero’s sacrifice and struggle for love lack logic. The theft scenes suffer from sluggish pacing and also lack logic. The emotions should have been written more powerfully here. Technically, the film is strong, but there are shortcomings in the dubbing. The BGM effectively carries the film. Overall, despite the flaws in the first half, it can be said that the second half, especially the climax, was impressive.
Adivi Sesh delivered a strong performance as Haridas, excelling in the role. His character has diverse shades, which he portrayed with great subtlety. One can witness a new Sesh in this performance. Mrunal Thakur was excellent as Saraswati, alias Juliet. In many instances, she dominated Sesh. The second half primarily revolves around her character, and she was outstanding in the struggling scenes. Kamkashi Bhaskarla, as Malli, shone briefly but left her impact. Prakash Raj’s role as the hospital head was decent, though not particularly strong. Anurag Kashyap’s character as a police officer was engaging for the time he was on screen, but his presence wasn’t extensive. Sunil performed well as another police officer. Jain Mary Khan, as yet another police officer, made her impact. The child artist playing Mrunal’s daughter was excellent. The remaining supporting actors were deemed satisfactory. How was Anurag Kashyap’s Telugu debut?
Strong Performances, Mixed Screenplay
Adivi Sesh’s story is good, and Abburi Ravi’s dialogues were appealing. Director Shanial Deo chose a good story, but there’s a noticeable hesitation in bringing it to screen with equal intrigue. There are shortcomings in the screenplay. The second half was handled well, and that’s what sustains the film. Technically, the movie is very strong. The visuals were also captivating. There are some mistakes in the editing. The music is good. The BGM is outstanding. Bheems impressed, and the BGM is captivating. Major shortcomings were observed in the screenplay, editing, and dubbing. Putting those aside, it can be said that overall, it’s an engaging and captivating movie.
‘Decoyt’ is an engaging movie in terms of its emotional love story and action. It can be described as a different attempt by Adivi Sesh. Overall, ‘Decoyt’ has the potential to captivate audiences.
