Ghaati Movie Review: Anushka Shetty's Return Falls Short

Sweety Shetty is back! After two years, Anushka graces the silver screen in Krish Jagarlamudi‘s Ghaati, a gritty tale set in the cannabis trade of the Andhra-Odisha border. Following her urban rom-com avatar in Miss Shetty Mr Polishetty, Anushka takes on a decidedly different role as Sheelavathi, entangled with the notorious Ghaati community and their unique cannabis strain. But does Ghaati live up to the hype surrounding our beloved Sweety’s return?

Sheelavathi’s Cannabis Kingdom

Anushka Shetty returns to the silver screen after a two-year hiatus with Ghaati, directed by Krish Jagarlamudi. The film, which follows her 2023 release Miss Shetty Mr Polishetty, finally hit theaters on September 5th and centers around the world of cannabis smuggling in the Andhra-Odisha border region. Ghaati introduces us to a unique community, the Ghaatis, who alone possess the knowledge to cultivate and transport a potent strain of cannabis known as Sheelavathi. This lucrative trade is controlled by the ruthless drug lord Kashtala Naidu (Ravindra Vijay) and his brother Kundula Naidu (Chaitanya Rao). The story follows Desiraju (Vikram Prabhu) and Sheelavathi (Anushka), former Ghaatis who abandoned their dangerous profession to pursue a different life. Bound by affection and shared dreams of marriage, they strive to repay their debts and build a future together. However, their plans are shattered when a gang, unbeknownst to Kundula Naidu, begins processing Sheelavathi cannabis into liquid form for wider distribution. The discovery that Desiraju leads this operation throws their lives into chaos, forcing them back into the very world they sought to escape. The film explores the reasons behind their return, Sheelavathi’s descent into criminality, Desiraju’s motivations, and the role played by Jagapathi Babu’s character, a police officer.

Krish, known for his emotionally resonant films like Gamyam, Vedam, and Kanche, attempts a similar approach with Ghaati. While the premise holds promise, the emotional depth and impactful dialogues characteristic of his previous works are missing. Although the initial portrayal of the Ghaatis’ lives and the protagonists’ introduction are engaging, the narrative loses momentum once the protagonists’ involvement in the smuggling operation is revealed, becoming somewhat predictable. The first half progresses steadily, culminating in an impactful interval scene that, unfortunately, foreshadows the events of the second half, which transforms into a revenge-driven action drama. The pacing becomes uneven, and despite numerous action sequences, particularly those featuring Anushka, they lack impact and feel forced. The climax, too, lacks surprise.

A Return Marred by Predictability

Anushka Shetty delivers a commendable performance as Sheelavathi, portraying her transformation from victim to criminal convincingly. While she handles the action sequences with dedication, their execution falls short. Her emotional scenes are effective, but the film doesn’t quite capture the intensity she displayed in previous roles like Arundhati, Baahubali, and Bhaagamathie. Vikram Prabhu shines as Desiraju, while Chaitanya Rao makes a strong debut as a villain, though his performance is somewhat limited by the stereotypical portrayal. Ravindra Vijay’s villainy is unremarkable, and Jagapathi Babu’s sporadic appearances as a police officer, although intended to be entertaining, don’t quite land. The supporting cast, including John Vijay, Raju Sundaram, and VTV Ganesh, deliver adequate performances.

Technically, the film is competent, with decent cinematography, music, editing, and production values. Overall, Ghaati offers an intriguing storyline and good performances from its leads, but falls short in forging a strong emotional connection with the audience. While the attempt to depict the lives and profession of the Ghaatis is interesting, the film’s execution ultimately prevents it from reaching its full potential.

Looking Ahead

Despite Anushka’s commendable return and the film’s technical prowess, Ghaati misses the mark in resonating emotionally. While showcasing the Ghaati community’s life holds promise, the lackluster execution sadly prevents it from becoming a truly memorable cinematic experience. We hope future ventures learn from this and deliver the powerful storytelling our audiences deserve.
